PostPosted: May 19, 2016 16:44    Post subject: Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz (Austria)

Last Sunday I had the opportunity to visit this well known provincial Museum - I loved it!
Founded in 1811 by Archduke Johann, it is full of old classics. Another focus of the collections are minerals from Styria/Austria. Friedrich Mohs, who brought the hardness scale to us, worked here! Now I have the pleasure to show you some of the museum's treasures. Photography is allowed without flash. Modern LED lightning is present but doesn't make it easier. Only about 10 % of the collections have acceptable lighting for photography.......

I think the minerals in the Joanneum are worthy to be shown here. So I will upload more and more in the next days. There are a couple of minerals from Bohemia, Slovakia, Romania (old Hungary!), South Tyrol and Slovenia. Please imagine that all these localities were part of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy when the Museum was founded.

The geologists, mineralogists and curators do an excellent job. All have a very open mind for us collectors. We are always welcome if we found unkown minerals - the experts offer a top service for identification. If there is a new interesting find for Styria or whole Austria, it will be published in "Steirischer Mineralog" or "Carinthia". The collaboration between collectors and scientists is excellent!

What a beautiful, old-fashioned flair for this collection - danke Gerhard :)

My favourite among all the specimens is the rhodochrosite from Kapnik (IMG_1987.JPG). You know it's an older collection when the label says that Kapnik belongs to Hungary (for nearly 100 years now a Romanian city) ;-)

Cheers!
