Bouquet of colorless quartz (the largest measuring 11.3 cm) partially covered with intact octahedral pink fluorite crystals. This sample was discovered in 1965 by the brother-in-law of Kaspar Fahner (first owner of this piece), then director of the Sommerloch tunnel project. The pink color is due to complex structural faults in the crystal network involving impurities such as YO2 groups. These defects seem to be formed at the relatively high temperature of 400 ° C.

Small is beautiful but big can be better.
Was difficult not to notice this specimen during my visit to the MIM museum last year.
I too was amazed by the gemminess of this crystal considering that size and quality often don't mix in the mineral world - this is even more true with emeralds.
Not sure how this specimen has survived intact - crystals of this quality and size are normally faceted to produce large stones which fetch record prices per carat.
As per your question, given an average length of 4.25cm for the three a-axis, the total height in the photo looks closer to 8cm.
Calculating crystal dimensions from photos can be quite tricky and I certainly don't mean to minimize this one.
But at the end of the day, whether it's 8 or 9.5 cm tall doesn't make a big difference - this specimen belongs to a very special category in the mineral world.

Thank you for your comment. The longest dimension of the crystal measured with a sliding caliper is 9.3 cm. Its mass is 278 grams.
As I am short-sighted, I tend to collect big crystals :-)

I knew I was taking a serious risk by assessing the size from a photo.
I think I will have to pay another visit to the MIM to get the size right for good.

What a perfectly balanced specimen with that "glowing" octahedron at the center, surrounded by those quartz crystals - an outstanding beauty!

Deep red perfectly shaped vanadinite crystals sprinkled on a matrix made of white Baryte crests. The vanadinites are well separated and standing on the crests, which accentuates the contrast between red and white. The group seems to be a floater.

Main crystal size : 1,2 cm
Geode of massive stibnite hosting perfect and transparent blood red crystals of getchellite and a small tuft of orpiment. It is this geodic growth, uncommon for the species, which has allowed the development of large and perfect crystals for a species that is usually found as cleaved masses.

Main crystal size : 15,7 cm
Large perfect calcite crystal formed on an amethyst matrix trimmed out from a larger geode. The first generation of this calcite crystal had a pointed termination and was covered with a second generation of calcite with a hexagonal section, as shown by the tip of the first generation which protrudes clearly from the top of the flat hexagonal face, with the whole having the shape of a scepter, which is unusual for calcite. A small hexagonal crystal calcite lies close to the base of the large crystal.

Spectacular bouquet of elbaite crystals which have grown at 360 degrees around a large crystal on a matrix of orthoclase. Very shiny crystals developed in parallel groups on a white matrix, the bottom of which is lined with fibrous malachite. The crystals have a very geometric shape as opposed to the average production of this mine and have a beautiful metallic and chatoyant blue color resulting from interference phenomena between the underlying azurite, the thin layer of malachite which has formed on it, and a thin layer of azurite which has later formed on the latter.

Thank you for your kind words.
You know, Lebanon is just 3:45 hours away from Paris with 4 flights per day. You just need your passport (no visa required), and the country is less wild than it sounds like. Actually, in the doomed region of the world called "Middel East", the French saying: "Dans le royaume des aveugles, les borgnes sont rois" applies perfectly to my country...
