Opening Day was yesterday. More to come from me on the Mexican minerals seen at the show......Superb collection of Dr Peter Megaw (an understatement), a few classics with dealers (Miners lunch Box, Kristalle, and others) and dealer XTAL with some new galena, arsenopyrite and fluorite from Mapimi described last month in the "What's new from Mexico" column.

The show is over. I was on location for the set up Thursday and shopping Friday. Of course, Mexican minerals were what I had my eyes out for. A lot of classics, which will be posted below.

Unfortunately not much out there from a what's new perspective. As I mentioned earlier, XTAL had some of the new galena, arsenopyrite and fluorite from the deeper levels of the Ojuela. This is all I saw from a new perspective.

Nice pictures of some examples seen at the show, but perhaps of more importance, how would you and other attendees, rate the show? The show attendance, the sales from hi end thru midrange material, and the mode or tenor of dealers/collectors talk. Is there anything that can be gleaned regarding the near future of mineral collecting from observations at this show?
This years East Coast show was the first in several years that I did not attend. DENVER starts in just 3 weeks now! BOB

The show is over but the Peter Megaw – Minerales Mexicanos exhibit remains fresh in my memory with an abundance of pics to help me with my memory. Before up-loading the 50 cases of Peter’s collection, I will be highlighting those specimens that caught my eyes, first for their relatively unknown or less known localities (some learning's for me) and secondly, my favorites on exhibit. There were an abundance of favorites (a few hundreds) that could include in “my favorite" but I have tried to limit myself to approximately 10 in each category.

BOB

To Bob's question, my impression is, an interested and enthusiastic crowd was in attendance. The numbers were down a bit, but the Babe Ruth Baseball Championship series were being held nearby, the Taste of West Springfield was going on maybe 10 blocks away and caused traffic issues, and intense thunder storms caused flooding and road closures all week end. So that may have kept the numbers down a bit. Good show/bad show is hard to call. I heard, "This is the best show I've ever had." , to "I'm not sure I want to do this show again." I buy low-mid range, so I had much to choose from. There were some of the best things that have ever been found for sale, so quality was high, as were the prices for those pieces. I think the thing that will guarantee the future of collecting is in the faces of those kids watching amazing and beautiful things come out of an uninteresting rock. The lectures were well attended and the mood seemed light and friendly. As a member of the show staff I'll take this opportunity to thank all the dealers for your continued interest in the show and patience with set-up. It was, and always is, great working with you and I hope you all had a good show. To the attendees I say keep your interest in natural history, you are part of it and to expand your mind is a worthwhile endeavor. In nature there is much mystery and truth, thank you for coming.

Paula and I attended the show this year for several reasons. First, because we will be the featured exhibitors in 2017 and Marty now Laura provide the next year's exhibitors with the opportunity to come see what they are getting themselves into. Second, because we wanted to see the Megaw collection and compare notes about what it takes to organize and travel with one's collection. Third, to enjoy a few days away from the Arizona summer and Massachusetts was very accommodating to have temperatures in the mid 90's along with high humidity.

While we have seen the Megaw collection numerous times in their home, everything just looks different when they are out in the show cases. A truly great display of Mexican minerals!

This next year will be spent arranging, labeling and packing 52 cases of minerals, backgrounds and bases. 2017 attendees will be able to see specimens from a portion of New Spain (Arizona) as well as Paula's worldwide thumbnails and toenails and some worldwide sphalerites.

Now for my impressions of the show. The entire staff does a great job of promoting and putting on this show. Paula and I were there most of Thursday during set-up and all day Friday. Attendance appeared to very good on Friday. The dealers I spoke with were all pleased with Friday sales, ranging from low to mid-range as well as a few higher end specimens exchanging hands.

Although we had a couple of conversations with other long-time collectors who were bemoaning that lack of show attendance as a general observation, this premise was certainly not supported by what we saw as we stood in various spots throughout the show. One dealer observed there did not seem to be as many collectors in attendance as last year.

My last comment is I saw Marty around 8:30pm at the hotel and when asked how the first day went, he exclaimed it was a great day and all the staff was dog-tired.
