Imilchil, Morocco has been producing some nice titanites, but this one seems to be unique. It consists of a boxwork of thin plates covered with small green to brown titanite crystals with scattered acicular dark green to black actinolite.

PS. Jordi has had similar specimens analyzed and was kind enough to supply me with additional information about this specimen. Apparently, the thin plates consist of coatings of titanite over a former crystal of rutile after ilmenite.

The Illinois fluorite district has been one focus of my collecting efforts for many years. The next few posts will include a few new pieces from one of the most prolific specimen producing areas in the U.S.

Neat to see an older Rosiclare District piece! These are incredibly rare to find...this is a nice one. The sphalerite from the Davis-Deardorff is a good example of what was found there post WW II.

Because of the contrast between the Baryte and fluorite this piece was difficult to photograph. I seldom use true backlighting when photographing minerals, but decided it was worth a try in the second photo. It was the only way to show the fluorite crystals that host the Baryte without burning out the light-colored Baryte.

Hi Michael.

Do you know if the brownish inclusions in the fluorite sample TN613 are hydrocarbons?

Hi Vinoterapia,

I'm not certain what the inclusions are. My understanding is that the whitish/gray inclusions which form the cubic phantoms are clay. The brown may be clay or something else entirely.
