I have to mention these two recently acquired specimens among my favourites, the more because both El Hammam and Elmwood are among my favourite localities:

Interesting and relatively new location for fluorite from Ireland. I've seen a few about for the last year or so, but not many, yet. Best location for Irish fluorite I've seen. Hopefully there will be more.

PostPosted: Jul 31, 2018 13:58    Post subject: Re: Favourite Fluorites?

Hello everyone! This is my first post on the FMF forums! I recently got back into rockhounding and I've come across quite a few beautiful Fluorites from my locality. I am only collecting crystals that I find myself and I've found numerous spots in my journeys. I am currently composing images of macro shots that I took of my specimens. I am located in Columbus, Ohio and I have noticed that the majority of the samples I'm finding are located along bike paths and rainwater collection ponds. I am wondering if the rock I am finding my samples in is transplanted from a quarry as a filler stone to line the edges of these ponds, or if the rock itself came from nearby in Columbus. Being that most of the fluorite found in Ohio is located in the northwest counties, I find it odd that I am finding numerous specimens in the city. I will post a sample picture of the fluorite I've found, but unlike other localities in Ohio, the crystals I'm finding are strikingly clear. Usually Ohio is known for the "rootbeer" type variety. I will be sure to post the pictures of my collection the the Collections Page, but I figured this would be a good place to start my new journey on this site!

OLIVER, Your first example from a bike path in Columbus Ohio, is undoubtedly fill from a quarry or nearby road construction, but I can't go any further.

Your second example is a nice find! There is no barite, however, if you look closely, there also are some blades of white celestine confirming its locality. The correct location, however, would be from the White Rock Quarry, near the town of Clay Center in Ottawa County Ohio. BOB

Thanks Bob! I was sure that no rock like that existed down here in Columbus naturally. I was so surprised to find it along the path and I collected about 30 samples. The White Rock quarry was in fact the exact location. I'm glad you could eyeball it! Thanks so much!

PostPosted: May 19, 2019 10:46    Post subject: The fascination of fluorite - LAPIS interview with Robert Brandstetter

There's an interesting online article from German mineral magazine LAPIS, an interview with passionate fluorite collector Robert Brandstetter. He talks about the passion to collect fluorite, why this mineral is so special and what makes a good fluorite specimen. It is in German language but Google Translate does a quite good job. Here's the link to the translated interview:

I definitely have to add Xia Yang Mine in Chinese province Fujian to my favourites. I think the locality is quite young and became really famous when the "tanzanite"-blue fluorites came out a few years ago, I think it was 2017 ... I'm glad that I finally got a specimen from that Mine, though it's just an "ordinary" green one. I think these crystals are simply amazing, a wonderful locality for fluorite!

Nice form, Tobi! I saw a few at the last Tucson show, must look when in Munich next month. Top quality Chinese fluorites always seem very expensive, so I have been somewhat negligent in acquiring them. We did get this one recently, however. From the Manaoshan Mine, near Chenzhou, Hunan Province. 9x6x5 cm overall size.

Both great contributions to this thread!
Carles, though I know your avatar specimen for a while, I always like to see it, a wonderful specimen and I can understand why this is your favourite fluorite.
And Jesse, as usual an outstanding specimen, perfect aesthetics, simply great!

We seem to be rather bereft of favorite fluorites recently, so time to add something. Over the past several Tucson shows I seem to have accumulated a small collection of interesting fluorites from the pegmatites around Chumar Bakhoor, Hunza Valley, Pakistan. Here are a few.

Hi Jesse, outstanding specimens, thanks for sharing! All of them are truly superb, I like the second and the third one the most. Really really great contribution to this thread!

Please more - I know you have many many world-class fluorites and for sure you haven't shown most of them yet ;-)
