PostPosted: Apr 20, 2018 20:06    Post subject: Tourmaline included Smokey Quartz specimen REAL or FAKE?

Greetings! My name is Mary, I am from Canada. I am new on this lovely forum and this is actually my first post :) I was wondering if anyone would have the kindness to tell me if they think this specimen is natural or man made? I have never seen a rutile quartz where the tourmaline appeared like it ‘splashed’ into the quartz, usually they stand very clearly - which made me fall in love with the piece but now I am wondering. I read that the process of inclusions occuring in nature is very slow vs. very fast in lab, but couldn’t find information in regards to tourmaline rutilated quartz.

The specimen says to be from Stak Nala Mine, in Pakistan.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Definitely natural. Lab quartz won't look like that and I don't think tourmaline can be lab made.

I agree with Turbo, I have never seen such things lab-made. And I also think that Stak Nala in Pakistan is correct, the elbaite (tourmaline) looks like a typical one from that locality.

That specimen is very real, and a very good specimen to boot!!! Mary with an extra y, the tourmaline embedded in the quartz isn't "splashed" rather, its got a colorless "cap" to the crystal that I think is being obscured by optical illusions that is making it look like its frayed inside the quartz.

In other words, the quartz is smoky, but mostly clear, and the termination of the tourmaline is colorless/clear, so light passes through both much easier than the darker areas, so it makes it look like its blending in with the quartz. I think its a complete, terminated tourmaline in that quartz. Very cool!!!

The Stak Nala location sounds right. I have a few friends in Pakistan that have given me a large flat and yours looks just like them, with one difference. All of my quartz tourmaline combos have colorless quartz with NO smoky coloration. So yours is rather unique at least in my eyes...
