PostPosted: May 26, 2018 08:30    Post subject: Peruvian quartz twin

I recently obtained this nice quartz twin, labeled only "Peru". I hope the visual information present in the images below will allow someone to provide a more detailed locality.

The twin is about 3 cm tall, lightly etched overall, and has a number of included brown needles that may be goethite. A couple of diamond-shaped scars on the surface show where simultaneously growing crystals, probably a rhombohedral carbonate, have detached. The associated untwinned crystals have a slight amethystine color.

The underside of the specimen (matrix? vein surface?) is light colored and somewhat soft, and includes a foliated mineral that can be detached with a fingernail.

Hopefully these things will be distinct enough to identify a locality!
