PostPosted: Jun 24, 2018 13:04    Post subject: Specimen with white prehnite - any idea on this?

Hi,

a fellow collector showed me this specimen and both he and me have no clue where it could be from: This 10 cm specimen consists of small quartz crystals associated with sphalerite and pyrite ... actually you would think Trepca, Romania or Peru ... but there are also some "balls" of white/colourless prehnite on the specimen which neither my fellow nor me know from any of these localities.

Any ideas where it could be from?

Thanks!

Hi Tobi,

How was the prehnite identified? I think your initial impressions of Trepca, Romania or Peru are spot on. Many of the mines in Romania produced spherical calcites that look similar to what is pictured. Could it be calcite instead of prehnite - of course a drop of acid would quickly confirm or eliminate this possibility.

Hi Michael,

it was already tested - no reaction to acid ...

And I held the specimen in my hand yesterday, those spheres really look like prehnite, except for the greenish colour that does not exist ...
