PostPosted: Jul 08, 2018 13:21    Post subject: Apatite?

I've been finding these little, some the size of my pinkie nail to about the size of a silver dollar, black, grey and greenish coloration with a waxy matte to shiny finish. I collected all of these at the mouth of the Withlacoochee River and Gulf of Mexico in west central Florida. I collected them in the marshy estuary during low tide. There's an island at the mouth of the river that used to be port Inglis, of which is currently about 9 miles up river, which apparently there were phosphate mines and moved through port Inglis. Also as I have recently discovered, this particular location I live in South Levy and the county south are in the Avon Park formation. Not sure if that would be relevant or not. The pics are not the best but hopefully enough to identify. Thanks for any info, it's much appreciated!

This looks to be a mixture of pieces of chert (dark-coloured, with conchoidal fractures, sharp edges) and maybe some fine-grained rock fragments (11 o'clock in the first photograph for example). Can't rule out phosphate fragments for some of them from these photographs, but my first reaction is that what you have is a bunch of pieces of road aggregate...

I think that this forum suggests posting one or two examples at a time rather than just a jumble of small pieces. Also you learn by learning to do testing to help you with your identification. Do your pieces scratch glass? What is the color of their streak etc etc.

Having said that, some of the more uniform pieces that show conchoidal fracturing appear to be chert/chalcedony quartzite. BOB

Amber,

Please read carefully What is it? - Where is it from? before to publish more jumbles of pieces. Thank you.

My apologies for the "jumbled mess", I had composed a post with individual pics and hit the wrong button hence no more post. In my not so brilliant haste, I thought seeing them as a lot may be beneficial. I will do my due diligence prior to posting more. Ty for the feedback!

As for possible suggested road debris, I could agree if there were asphalt roads in the vicinity. This is a lone dirt road that disappears into the Gulf. To the north is gator hammock preserve to the south is the Withlacoochee preserve. This is a very "undeveloped" area, the bugs and wildlife alone keep out.

Thanks Kevin and Bob, I do appreciate your input and/or suggestions for my somewhat sloppy post. I will do further research prior to posting again. Although the more I learn, it seems to beg more confusion....

Some of the pieces, well rounded, with "bubble" like texture on their surface, appear to be slag, perhaps from early iron - furnaces. Tom

I'm really unsure of the slag, although there are a few pieces that don't look or feel like the others, possibly unnatural. The question is origin, being that this area is very undeveloped. Then again constant currents and tides coming in/out could push literally anything to shore. Thank you for your taking the time to read and respond.
