PostPosted: Jul 10, 2018 23:19    Post subject: Re: Sainte Marie-aux-Mines Show 2018

Hi,
With a little delay, I give you my impressions of the Sainte_Marie_aux_Mines 2018 Show. My first visit dates back to 1967! The show has changed and I too, because all these annual visits of the shows of Ste Marie and Munich (since 1977 = 35 times) formed my taste for Mineralogy and experience, while the University gave me the tools to see the minerals.
First of all, I would like to thank Jordi Fabre whose expertise and availability you appreciate. His welcome is always warm.
Behind his stand was a great Catalan photographer, Joaquim Callén.
I am always impressed when I see such an artist at work! Monstrously equipped, he is however slower than me who wanders at random (not quite!), equipped with a small camera.
I will show you many pictures of my visit and at the end, I will show pictures of specimens from various museums.
Thank you for accompanying me.
Roger.

PostPosted: Jul 15, 2018 14:55    Post subject: Sainte Marie-aux-Mines Show 2018 / Waiting for Ste. Marie 2019!

Although this thread is still well alive by the excellent contributions of Mr. Roger Warin I'm finishing my participation in it with some general thoughts on the general situation of our hobby.

I continue to think that some things are changing, although I am not sure in which direction that changes moves.
For years we are seeing as a whole generation of collectors who began their collections in the 50s-60s of the last century has been disappearing and I remember very well that it was always said that this generation was something like the "last bastion" since it does not appeared new collectors and what will happen when these "classic" collectors were missing?. Well, tens of thousands of pieces from these collections have been coming in the last years to the market and the market not only has digested them well but also seems to ask for more. For me this means that the "last bastion" has found a takeover and that between the general improvement of the cultural level of the society and the emergence of the Internet many and very varied new collectors are now happy to collect minerals and are very active buying them.
What will happen to these new generations? Will they remain active when they grow up as it happened in a reasonable percentage with the collectors of the last century? Chi lo sa... time will tell and it is very difficult to foresee it but for now and contrary to so many pessimistic forecasts (at some point even mine) "la nave va" and here we still remain afloat 😁

PostPosted: Jul 15, 2018 16:18    Post subject: Re: Sainte Marie-aux-Mines Show 2018

Hi,
I share the opinion of Mr Jordi Fabre. He is very experienced and is very sensitive to the evolution of collections.
I belong to the old generation who started mineralogy at the University in the fifties! Mineralogy enlightened my life because I was able to pass on my knowledge to many young collectors. I've been running a hobby club (AGAB) for 50 years ( http://www.agab.be ).
Always close to the university environment (University of Liege), I know some brilliant researchers in geology. They are driven by a great passion and their knowledge of mineralogy is profound. Renewal is assured.
However, these young doctors often see only mediocre minerals placed at their permanent disposal.
That is why the boss of the Liège laboratory, Professor Frédéric Hatert, revived the Cesàro and Buttgenbach museum, which had been partially destroyed in a fire during a bombing in September 1944.
I am confident that future collectors of good level will be those scientists who finally had little contact with the minerals they are studying. Currently, they only see ghosts of their minerals, that is to say, spectra and diffractograms tasteless. These scientists will be happy to find and collect some minerals that their ancestors began to describe more than two centuries ago.
To collect well, it is necessary to understand, that is paintings of painters or minerals and fossils.
The role of amateurs is important. Not only do they create an economic activity, but their specimens will end up living in a museum.
Some dealers should make efforts in adjusting prices to the quality of the specimens. It should even be possible to give the children mediocre but representative minerals.
I join a great classic of Cumbria (Cesàro Museum).
Roger.
