PostPosted: Aug 10, 2018 06:04    Post subject: Fizelyite?

Another specimen that I bought a few years ago.
And again I was not able to find similar specimen on mindat or elsewhere.
So I hope to get some professional input from other collectors.

The label says: Fizelyite, Boulangerite, Selenite, Herja mine.
The size of the specimen is approcimately 7 or 8 cm.
The sprays of what should be the Fizelyite are all approximately 1 cm diameter.

Thanks in advance,
Mathias

For me it looks like a very typical Stibnite on tiny Quartz crystals. A nice specimen i must say. I know Herja mine very well but i can not see any of the minerals you mentioned.

Now to the very good news: Look out for Fülöppite crystals!!!!!!!!!!!
Usually you will find the very nice Stibnite sprays on the "Display" side - and opposide on the "less interesting" side are tiny Quartz crystals with lots of overlooked tiny black Fülöppite crystals. A very rare mineral in good crystals. Mindat does show a good selection of it.

I really expect Fülöppite on your sample. If they are present you have an excellent killer piece! Good luck with it!

Dear Jordi and Gerhard,

Thanks for your reply.

I took a look at the backside as adviced by Gerhard, and these tiny quartz crystals and black crystals are indeed present. I never looked at the backside of the specimen before.

The tiny quartz- and black crystals are only visible by using my microscope, the quartz crystals are typically smaller than 0.5 mm, the black crystals even smaller, perhaps 0.1-0.2 mm. Too small to make a photo with my camera.

On the backside I also noticed a black fibrous mineral, very small as well, perhaps that might be the Fizelyite.

Thanks a lot again for your input.
Regards,

Mathias

It is a classic and typical specimen from the Herja Mine, Maramures County. Stibnite may be accompanied by radial, fibrous Zinkenite groups.
Indeed, typically tabular, or short prismatic, curved, striated and tarnished Fülöppite crystals may appear being raised on scalenohedral calcite or sub-millimeter quartz crystals.
Fizélyite is unlikely to be present on this specimen.
