Slicing Through the Congo

BANDED MALACHITE

Below are two photographs (front & rear) of a Malachite slice from the Mashamba West Mine. It is one of my many decorator pieces, but pieces with purpose. It highlights the growth of the malachite, and the internal structure of botryoidal malachite.

I have also included two photographs under the microscope to highlight the transition of one band to another, and the internal structure of another band. It shows the bands are granular and crystalline.

Enjoy!!

Octahedral Pyrite – Peruvian Style

Below are a few photographs of one of my Octahedral Pyrite specimens from the Huanzala Mine, Peru.

Like most Pyrite specimens it was a difficult one to photograph – you are really trying to take snap-shots of a mirror. The crystals are bright and golden with sharp edges and interesting terminations. Some of the crystals have smaller crystals growing on the surface, which might be Sphalerite. The largest crystal is about 50 mm on edge.

I have also included a few photographs taken under the microscope with an emphasis on terminations.

Enjoy!

PostPosted: Oct 16, 2018 23:20    Post subject: So it’s Boring, Hey? Your View!!!

ON BORING ENGINE CYLINDERS

When you are building engine cylinders, whether steam, petrol or diesel, you need an accurate means of boring the cylinders to within 0.001 (0.025 mm) to 0.002 (0.05 mm) of an inch. Below are some photos of the tools I use to achieve accurately bored cylinders.

The first photo shows a boring head kit for use on a milling machine, but it can also be used on the lathe. It comes with the boring head, a 2/3 Morse taper adapter and a selection of brazed carbide tipped boring bars. You will note that the head is on a precision ground dovetail mechanism. The head moves relative to the base.

The second photo shows the boring head unit. There is a small screw in the middle of the head which enables you to advance the boring bar in precise steps to achieve the desired diameter. The two holes in the top, shown in the third photo, are for the boring bars which are held tight by three Allen head cap screws on the side of the head. These can be seen in the first photo. The procedure involves tightening the screws – make the cut. Then loosen the screws advance the head a little further with the screw. Tighten the screws and then make the cut. This continues until you have the required internal diameter of the bore.

Of course you do not start with the boring head, but something much cruder, say a large twist drill. Once you have a hole that is to within about 0.1 (2-3 mm) inch of the required size you then switch over to the boring head.

In the last photo is a selection of boring bars for the lathe. The one at the top is a grooving tool that enables you to put slots inside the bore of a cylinder. The other two bars have carbide cutting bits attached. I prefer carbide bits like these – you can change them whenever you need a new cutting point.

Mexican Magic – Wulfenite with Mimetite

Below are a few photos of one of my Wulfenite with Mimetite specimens from Mexico. The Wulfenite crystals range in size from about 0.5 mm to 10 mm, and the Mimetite has a beautiful grass green colour.

I have also included a few close-up photographs.

Also included are a few taken under the microscope. I will let the pictures speak for themselves – absolutely fascinating.

Arsenopyrite with Siderite

Below are a few photos of one of my Chinese arsenopyrite specimens. The specimen is composed of a solid matrix of arsenopyrite with large and lustrous crystals of arsenopyrite growing on top, and associated with siderite. There are also a few quartz crystals present too.

I have taken a few photos under the microscope. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Enjoy!!

Dear FJ:

Your kind words are much appreciated.

Surprisingly, no one ever asks me what I am recovering from, which is probably the best, as most might find my explanation very politically incorrect. I come from a very different time – a more masculine time.

Stay tuned I have a lot of things to share, some will be very exciting, and I hope to average about 1 new page every two days, unless I get distracted with other things.

Best Wishes.

Chalcopyrite Crystals

Below are a couple of photos of another of my Bulgarian specimens. The specimen hosts some large and complex Chalcopyrite crystals with a beautiful golden luster. These are associated with Quartz and Sphalerite. This specimen is another one that is hard to photograph with my current set-up. I am in the process of making a special photo table just for minerals.

I have also included a few close-up shots of the specimen, along with a few shots taken under the microscope.

The largest Chalcopyrite crystal is about 45 mm wide.

Enjoy!!

PostPosted: Oct 18, 2018 02:09    Post subject: GALLIUM Metal

Below is a photo of one of the most fascinating elements in existence – Gallium. You have not lived until you have had the pleasure of playing with 1Kg of Gallium metal.

The block shown is one I will be using in my p-block table. It is 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm in size, and to create the ‘mottled’ texture I just did a little trick with a muffin holder.

Where did I do this trick? On the kitchen table of course, where else does one do Chemistry and Physics?

Enjoy!!

PostPosted: Oct 18, 2018 02:16    Post subject: This is one of the main components in Cassiterite

Below is a photo of one another Carbon group elements – Tin. I find the metal absolutely fascinating especially when I look at my Cassiterite specimens from Bolivia and China.

Despite my education and work experience as a professional scientist I still find the interaction of atoms with each other really profound, and here I am speaking in a spiritual context.

The block shown is one I will be using in my p-block table. It is 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm in size, and to create the ingot of tin I did it on the kitchen stove. I do like to keep things simple!

Enjoy!!

Below is a photo of yet another Carbon group element – Lead. I also find the metal absolutely fascinating especially when I look at my collection of Galena specimens.

Never, and I repeat never let anyone tell you that Lead is a boring metal. It has a beautiful luster that will be preserved in plastic for centuries.

The block shown is one I will be using in my p-block table. It is 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm in size. The ingot of Lead was prepared on the kitchen stove, during breakfast I think!

Enjoy!!

Peruvian Perfection – scrumdiddilyumptious

The mineral shown in the photos below is one of my Galena with Pyrite specimens from the Palomo mine.

It is not the largest specimens I have, but it has tremendous character. The crystals are bright and sharp with interesting faces and associations.

I have taken one close-up photo of the piece and a few taken under the microscope with an emphasis on the crystal faces and terminations.

For those who might be interested I do all my mineral photography on a desk next to my bed using an old computer. It does not get any easier than that.

True practical science is about simplicity!

How many photos could I do in a day = 150
How many photos does a single mineral afford > 1000

I do enjoy this work! In retirement I am a free man – no debts, just time.

Torbernite Crystals – large, beautiful and sexy!!

Below are a few photographs taken under the microscope of one of my Uranium specimens from the El Sherana mine.

I have had these specimens in my collection for almost 60 years. They were a gift from my father. How he got them is a long and amusing story!

The actual Torbernite specimen is 110 mm x 70 mm x 60 mm. It is a matrix specimen covered with oodles of beautiful Torbernite crystals associated with another unknown pale blue mineral. The Torbernite crystals range in size from sub-millimeter to about 10 mm.

When I can take a first-class photo of the piece I will upload a few pictures.

Enjoy!

Under the Microscope Series

Producing photos under the microscope is very easy, perhaps even pedestrian. The hardest part is editing and choosing those to show.

If any viewer would like to see additional photos of anything I have posted (mineral or metal) just ask, as I am more than happy to do so.

Kind Regards

Peruvian Pleasure

Below are a few photos of one of my Peruvian eye-candy specimens – Sphalerite with Quartz and minor Pyrite. Though the specimen is composed of common minerals, it has great aesthetics. The largest Sphalerite crystal is about 30 mm wide.

I have included a few close up shots of the Sphalerite crystals, and a few taken under the microscope.

Enjoy!

Below are a few photos of another of my Mexican specimens – Boulangerite (confirmed). It is a matrix specimen with lots of large voids filled with Boulangerite crystals. The back of the specimen also contains pockets full of Boulangerite crystals along with minor pyrite and some massive Sphalerite.

I have included some close-up photos, and several photos taken under the microscope.

Chemical Elements – my ongoing adventures - INDIUM

Below is a photo of another one of the Boron group elements – Group 13 – Indium. It is a very beautiful and fascinating element. You can easily cut it with a knife and it melts at about 157 degrees C.

The block shown is one I will be using in my p-block table. It is 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm in size. I cast this ingot on the kitchen stove by melting about 125 grams of Indium in a stainless steel cup, and then poured the molten metal into a Teflon coated muffin tray. After it had cooled I did a little cleaning and polishing.

I do like to keep things simple!

Enjoy!!
