Chemical Elements – my ongoing adventures - BISMUTH

Below is a photo of one my Nitrogen group elements – Group 15 – Bismuth.

The block shown is one I will be using in my p-block table. It is 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm in size. I cast this ingot on the kitchen stove by melting about 450 grams of Bismuth in a stainless steel cup, and then poured the molten metal into a Teflon coated muffin tray. After it had cooled I did a little cleaning and polishing.

I do like to keep things simple!

You can buy this metal online as highly iridescent crystals with stepped faces.

Cinnabar – Chinese Style

Below are a few photos of one of my Chinese Cinnabar specimens. It was one of the first pieces I acquired from China at wholesale thanks to my Arizona contact.

It is a large cabinet specimen with lots of Cinnabar crystals ranging in size from about 1 mm to 30 mm. The Cinnabar crystals have a deep red colour that shows well when backlight. Note that the specimen was not backlight in this instance.

Given the size of the pice I have included a few views showing sections of the specimen, and some photos taken under the microscope.

Below is a photo of my s-block chemical element table. With the exception of Cesium all the elements have a silvery-grey tone, which is best seen by viewing the element ampoules individually. Though it is not apparent in the photo, both Strontium and Barium have a very nice metallic luster.

This was not the easiest table to assemble as all the elements, with the exception of Beryllium and Magnesium, are air and moisture sensitive. But some were a lot easier to manipulate than others!

The table is 700 mm x 400 mm in size, and each element block measures 100 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm.

It is noteworthy that the table, the blocks and the labels were done by me at home using very basic equipment – most of it from the hardware store and the local stationary store.

The p-block table will be slightly different as I plan to display the gases separately from the other p-block elements. My aim is to create a display that lights up each gas – one after the other – with my plasma driver unit. A ‘disco’ light fest with purpose!

SOLID GRAPHITE CYLINDER

Below is a photo of another of my chemical element samples. It is a solid cylinder of graphite 200 mm long with a diameter of 50 mm.

I initially bought the graphite cylinder to make a special crucible for melting some metals at high temperatures. When it arrived in the mail I thought it looked too nice to bore, so it became a part of my element collection.

I would like to make some special ingots of some of the lanthanide metals. I think tantalum (or molybdenum) would make a better material. I could bore a solid cylinder of either metal on the lathe and turn an internal thread at the top of the cylinder with a matching plug. The plug would be made so I could evacuate the crucible. The rest is just basic cooking at high temperature.

Sphalerite, Galena and Quartz

Below are a few photos of another ‘combo’ specimen from Bulgaria. This piece contains Sphalerite, Galena and Quartz. The Sphalerite appears black, but when backlit it is translucent with a beautiful yellow colour. Some of the Galena crystals occur as rectangular blocks with corner modifications.

I have also included a few close up shots and a few taken under the digital microscope.

Hematite - ELBA style

Below are a few photos of another of my Elba specimens. This comes from a more obscure part of that beautiful island.

The specimen comprises a vugh of massive but granular hematite containing dozens of beautiful crystals of Hematite on one side, and star-burst Quartz on the other. The crystals are large, very bright and well-formed with very interesting faces.

Hematite - ELBA style – Part 2

Below are a few more photos of Terranera Mine Hematite that was shown in my previous post. These were taken with the digital Microscope, and in this instance I have focused on crystal faces and terminations.

In fact there is so much to see with this Hematite that the specimen could easily afford several hundred individual and unique photographs.

At the moment I need to modify the microscope. I think I will make a gimbal mechanism so the scope can be moved at least 270 degrees of rotation and mount the whole unit on a precision mechanical table. The table I have in mind would allow precision movement in 2-axis, just like the table on my milling machine. This way I will be able to take photographs of sections of very large specimens with relative ease.

Boy’s Toys – Part 4 – Telescopes

In two previous posts I have shown precision instruments that are routinely used in the home workshop. I have also shown a machine tool (Boring Head) that will allow you to accurately bore a cylinder.

Some may ask, well how do you know that your cylinder has an internal bore of say 50.10 mm and not 50.05 mm. Easy! You can use telescoping gauges.

A telescoping gauge is a measuring tool with spring-loaded plunges used together with a micrometer to measure the inside of holes or bores. Telescoping gauges are made insets to measure from small to very large bores.

The telescoping gauge has a handle that is attached to two spring-loaded plungers. Using the handle, place the telescoping gauge into the bore. Release the lock screw on the handle. The spring-loaded plungers will come out and touch the side of the bore. The exact size of the hole is found by measuring across the two ends of the plungers with an outside micrometer.

Field Collecting on the Moon

Below are a few photographs of material from my History of Science and Technology collection.

The first two show the Apollo 10 modules in orbit, preparing the way for Apollo 11.

I have also included one page of a 20 page document that outlines what the Apollo 11 crew ate during their trip to the moon and back. It is in fact their daily menu of food. Note the typing – no PC’s back in 1969!

I have oodles of other documents related to the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions, including letters and memos.

Magnetite

Below are a few photos of another of my Bolivian specimens - Magnetite. The Magnetite crystals range in size from sub-millimeter to about 18 mm and occur on dacite.

I have taken a few under the microscope with the emphasis on crystal size, shape and surface features along with matrix. One photo also shows a well-formed feldspar crystal – albeit small.

Textbook Crystal

Below are a few photos of a Magnetite crystal I acquired from China. It is a very large crystal. The faces have an almost velvet like luster that shimmers when held up against the light. This feature is most evident in the fifth photograph.

I have taken a few photos with the aid of my digital microscope to show the surface features of the crystal faces. I have also taken a few on the matrix side of the specimen.

Below is a picture of some of my copper balls. I have about 30. They are part of another element collection I am building. The balls weight about 100 grams and are about 30 mm in diameter. They are used in the electroplating industry. According to the Certificate of Analysis (COA) they are 99.99% Cu.

Some have shown interest in the Field Collecting on the moon series. Today I attach the proposed food plan for Neil Armstrong’s trip to the moon.

Silver

Below is a picture of some of my silver cones. They each have an average weight of 300 grams and a purity of about 99.9% Ag. I used some of these to cast the silver medallion that appears in my main display of the d-block elements. Casting copper, silver and gold are very easy to do at home, and the usual method is to use an electric furnace. For higher melting point metals other techniques must be employed – propane/oxygen gas fired furnace or an electric arc furnace.

Cassiterite Crystals

Below are a few photos of one of my Sichuan specimens. It is Cassiterite with Muscovite. This Chinese locality produced many fine specimens, and I am happy to have representative samples of them all – aquamarine, scheelite, cassiterite and others too.

The largest Cassiterite crystal is about 20 mm wide.

I have taken a few close-up photographs and a few under the microscope.

Pyrite with Tetrahedrite

Below are a few photos of another of my specimens from the Quiruvilca mine. It is Pyrite with Tetrahedrite – nothing special about the piece other than it has fantastic aesthetics and just glows – even from a distance. Yummy in fact! The main crystal is 25 mm wide and is sharp and bright with lots of surface features to explore.
