Pyrite (Sunflower)

Below are a few photos of another of my Chinese Pyrite specimens. When these first appeared on the market they were called Sunflower Pyrites. They are among my shiniest shiny things.

Millerite

Below are a few photos of a Millerite specimen. It has a lovely chatoyant bronze luster. The specimen was a section of a very large vein in the mine, recovered in 1996.

I have also included a few photos taken under the microscope to show some of the specimens interesting morphology.

Magnetic moments with the Lanthanides

I decided to spend a few moments today and perform some simple experiments on my lanthanide elements. The experiments were just playing around with magnets and having some fun!

Below are a few photos of some of my lanthanide metals that are attracted to a magnet at room temperature. (For more detailed information on the magnetic properties of the lanthanide metals - just google!)

The magnet chosen was a rare earth magnet with a holding strength of 90 kilograms. It is 50 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The photos show the largest piece of lanthanide metal that could just be held against the force of gravity by the magnet at a height of 30 cm. Of those tested Gadolinium seemed to have the strongest attraction and Thulium the weakest. The piece of Thulium shown in the photo was just barely sufficient to be held. Any heavier and it would have dropped every time. Erbium was magnetic, but the smallest piece I have (50 gram) was just too heavy.

Hematite after Magnetite (variety martite)

Very aerial parallel growth, of very sharp Hematite crystals (after octahedral Magnetite) with very well defined skeletal growths, extraordinarily bright and partially coated by small recrystallized lenticular Hematite crystals. The specimen is highly magnetic.

Calcite from China:

Below are a few photos of one of my Calcite specimens from China. The specimen is a solid matrix of Calcite hosting oodles of beautiful and gemmy crystals of Calcite, and on these smaller crystals has grown even larger Calcite crystals. The largest Calcite crystal is about 30 mm tip-to-tip.

I think, your "sunflower pyrites" are from Luodong, Liuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. I've never heard of such pyrites from Hunan!

I think, your "sunflower pyrites" are from Luodong, Liuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. I've never heard of such pyrites from Hunan!


Many thanks for the information. The locality is what my vendor contact in China gave, but nothing is really written in stone when it comes to Chinese minerals – no pun intended.

A Rare sulfosalt

Below are a few photos of another of my minerals specimens from the San Jose Mine – Franckeite. Franckeite is not the best looking rock you can get, but it has an interesting chemical formula and a lot of really crazy looking crystals.

I have also included a few photos taken under the microscope. There are other minerals present, perhaps Jamesonite, but I would only be guessing as to what the others could be.

Textbook Calcite Crystal – Almost!

Below are a few photos of another of my Shimen mine Calcite specimens. This specimen is composed of a matrix of calcite with oodles of sharp and crystal clear crystals of Calcite from the sub-millimeter range to about 3 mm. The largest Crystal is a very sharp and a translucent yellow. It is about 72 mm tip-to-tip.

I have also included a few photos taken under the microscope of some of the very small Calcite crystals.

Pyrite with Quartz

Below are a few photos of another of my Bulgarian specimens – Pyrite with Quartz.

The Pyrite crystals are large and complex with beautiful striated faces. They have grown with quartz, and the largest Pyrite crystal is about 40 mm wide. The quartz exhibits a vivid green colour.

Below are two photographs of two of my element blocks before sanding and polishing.

After the encapsulating substrate has cured, a process that can take from 24 – 48 hours to occur, the blocks have slight imperfections that need to be removed. The first is the ‘concave meniscus’ ridge that occurs on the upper perimeter of the cured block. The other minor defect is slight surface irregularities. Both are easily removed by sanding and polishing.

Making element blocks is not hard, but it is labour intensive and requires attention to detail.

Each metal weights 1 troy ounce.

Below are a few photos of a Pyrite on Fluorite from the De’an Mine. The Pyrite clusters exhibit a beautiful golden luster, and this is contrasted against a lavender coloured Fluorite. The Fluorite possesses a very silk-like luster – the result of multiple stepping on the Fluorite crystal faces.

The Granite Surface Plate – When Rock Meets Machine

In the metrology lab it is crucial to have precision lapped surfaces on which measurements can be made of mechanical components. You may also need a very flat surface on which to setup fixtures or jigs. The potential applications are only limited by your imagination.

I now take great pleasure in introducing you to the granite surface plate; measuring 300 mm x 230 mm x 50 mm with 0.0001" accuracy, it is perfect for lapping tools or checking setups on small engineering projects.

So what, 0.0001 inch or for those converted to SI units is just 0.00254 mm. Well, the average thickness of a sheet of A4 bond paper (80 gm/sqm) is 0.11 mm (measured). That is about the thickness of one sheet of A4 compared to the thickness of a stack of almost 44 A4 sheets.

A single strand of hair of a baby is about 0.05 mm – so the plate is lapped to a side to side accuracy equivalent to 1/20th of the thickness of a human baby hair. And for the home-workshop you do not need much better.

With the right machine tools you can recreate the world!

Below are a few photos showing the preparation of an ingot of Yttrium for encapsulation.

I was thinking about using the bandsaw but the shape of the ingot was not just right for this style of saw. There was a high probability that I might lose a finger or get hit in the head with a high velocity Yttrium projectile.

The standard hand-held hacksaw using a very hard bimetal blade was the best approach. It takes longer, but as I tell my children – you cannot rush art.

After the pieces were cut I selected the best looking piece, and then proceeded to sand and polish it. The Yttrium that remained was put into storage.

SAW 2

After the ingot had been cut, sanded and polished, it was encapsulated in a special plastic substrate at room temperature and at atmospheric pressure using my proprietary methods and techniques.

Below is a photo of the finished Yttrium block, along with other members of the group 3 elements – Scandium and Lutetium. The blocks shown in the photo had not been sanded or polished – they were in their raw state.

Creating a periodic table of the chemical elements made from real elements is fun, but it is very labour intensive, especially if your aim is to create displays that cannot be bought or are too expensive to buy.

The bromine block is a typical example – no plastics fabricator would touch a flask containing 30 ml of elemental Bromine, including those businesses that specialize in making acrylic displays.

Sichuan Adventures

Below are a few photographs of another of my Scheelite on Muscovite specimens from the Sichuan province.

The specimen is a large cabinet piece hosting seven gemmy orange crystals of Scheelite. The largest Scheelite is about 25 mm tip-to-tip.
