Goethite Stalagmite

Below are a few photos of one of my Chinese Goethite specimens. It is really a stalagmite with outstanding botryoidal features – along with a very high lustre.

The thickest section is about 40 mm wide, and it tapers to about 20 mm at the base.

Polished Malachite

Below are a few photos of another of my ‘decorator’ pieces – Polished Malachite.

The colour of this specimen is spectacular in my view. I have always enjoyed collecting Malachite, especially the botryoidal variety.

Enjoy!!!

Below are a few photos of another of my Malachite specimens from the Mashamba West Mine.

The specimen has a very nice chatoyant luster that is not shown well in the first three photos, but this characteristic of the specimen can be seen in the rear shot.

Enjoy!!

Khrushchev dol Mine Galena

Below are a few photos of another of my Khrushchev dol Mine Galena specimens.

This specimen contains bright, sharp, complex and isolated crystals of Galena with Calcite and minor Sphalerite and minor Pyrite.

Galena specimens with isolated crystals were not common at the mine.

I have included a few photos taken under the scope. The Sphalerite crystals are textbook but on the tiny side!

Pyrite - Huanzala Mine

Below are a few photos of another of my Pyrite specimens from the Huanzala Mine.

The specimen comprises several very large complex and interlocking crystals of Pyrite. Some of the Pyrites have beautifully striated faces. In some cases smaller crystals of Pyrite have grown in pockets located inside the faces of some of the larger Pyrites.

Largest Pyrite crystal is about 50 mm wide.

Enjoy!!!

Another Style at the Krushev dol Mine

Below are a few photos of another of my Krushev dol Mine Galena specimens. This piece is very typical of the mine – lots of crystals in close association with each other. The crystals are very bright and well-formed with rounded edges. Many of the crystals display growth pattern – rings or ridges.

I have also included a few close-up shots. Absolutely stunning!

Enjoy!!

Perusing Peru – Again!!

Below are a few photos of a Pyrite specimen from the Julcani Mine.

The specimen is a section of a vein (plate) comprising small crystals of Pyrite, and on this plate have grown the most delicious looking crystals of Pyrite. The mineral chaps call this style of crystal a pyritohedron. The crystals are bright and well-formed – some with beautiful striations. The largest Pyrite crystal is 40 mm wide.

Enjoy!!!

Red Dome Malachite

I do enjoy collecting ore samples with character, and I have a couple from the Red Dome Mine. The specimens I have from the Red Dome Mine are really on the borderline of ore samples with sparkle or collector quality mineral specimens.

Below are a few photos of one of my Malachite pieces from the Red Dome mine. The Malachite has the most enchanting chatoyant luster, and it also displays growth rings of the Malachite as it was being deposited in the ore body.

Enjoy!!

Native Copper

Below are a few photos of native Copper, another of my mineral specimens from the Red Dome Mine. Though it does not contain any visible crystals of Copper, it has a nice patina and a lot of character.

Enjoy!!

PostPosted: Nov 12, 2018 22:22    Post subject: Native Silver with analysis

Native Silver:

Below are a few photos of a native Silver specimen from a very obscure Australian locality – Elizabeth Hill Mine. It is a large and heavy piece – 530 gram. I saw a smaller, and in my opinion inferior specimen for sale on a high-end mineral site with a 4 figure price tag. When I asked him who supplied it, it disappeared from the site – that was in 2007.

The silver from this mine was exceptionally pure. Of all the samples analyzed the only other component seen was a little Mercury. At the end of the main adit was a fine deposit of Vanadinite, but nothing else. The silver was hosted in quartz and the largest piece of Silver ever recovered was 150 kilograms. I had the pleasure to meet with the Mine’s senior geologist and discuss the genesis of the deposit. I was also given written permission to collect at the site (2004), which at the time had finished operations.

I have also attached a few other photographs. The first is a photo of the regional geology/geography. The second is a mine plan I drafted to aid me should I ever collect at the site. The third photo is an analysis of a portion of my Silver specimen confirming the Senior Geologist’s claim of the high purity of the silver from the Elizabeth Hill Mine.

Enjoy!!

MAKING Short Work of Plate Steel

If you ever need to drill a good hole in metal plate without being covered in a mountain of metal shavings look no further than the annular cutter. These take hole making saws to a whole new dimension!

Below are a few photos of my annular cutter set. The largest has a diameter of 25 mm and the smallest 14 mm diameter. They come in much larger diameters too. They can be used on the metal turning lathe or the milling machine.

Making a suitable holder for the cutters was one of my first projects on the lathe. And I have included a few photos of the finished product, and a very ad hoc mechanical plan I drew to help me with the project.

It was a very simple turning project using a 100 mm long by 35 mm diameter hot-rolled steel bar. I also needed a spring and two ball bearings.

Enjoy!!!
