PostPosted: Nov 28, 2018 12:22    Post subject: Gortdrumite from Spain?

In November 1997 i visited Almaden and Almadenejos in Castilia-La Mancha, Spain. In the El Entredicho mine (Almadenejos) i found a very interesting specimen. On a bed of Dolomites are good crystals of Chalcopyrite. The biggest part of it is now replaced by cinnabar. Under the microscope i can also see some black elongated crystals. I think they are typical for the relativly new mineral Gortdrumite. The chemistry Chalcopyrite replaced by Cinnabar would fit perfect for it. One pseudomorph is damaged - so i can see the golden Chalcopyrite. Extremly tiny Malachite is present too.

Now my question? Is Gortdrumite known from Almaden district or from other places in Spain? I can find nothing. I think it could be new for the country. This theme would specially interesting in the spanish Forum - but i have no access to it and i do not speak spanish. Anyway - all answers and suggestions are very welcome. Thank you!

Yes, gortdrumite has been found in the El Entredicho open pit at Almadén. An article on Almadén will appear in the Jan-Feb issue of Mineralogical Record.

Wendell is absolutely right and yes, your specimen looks like Gortdrumite.

BTW, you are a lucky collector, these pseudos Chalcopyrite-Cinnabar are very rare! Congratulations ;-)
