Hi , about one year ago I get this samples from Veracruz.

The crystals have a great luster, hardness think 6 , they easily scratch the glass but no the quartz.

The fracture is irregular.

My first impression was cassiterite, or another zinc mineral, but I am not an expert.

Some pals say maybe a type of tourmaline or vesuvianite.

What do you think?

Possibly andradite (var. melanite) garnet. Fine specimens come from Veracruz.

A type of garnet is my gut reaction too. How uniform is the specimen? Is it mostly crystal or mostly matrix? It seems a good size to get a reasonable density value through water displacement.

I agree that cassiterite and garnet (melanite) could be possible, but also tourmaline (schorl). It has the same hardness as quartz and would maybe leave no scratches on it ...

But is it confirmed that these crystals are from Veracruz? I have never seen anything like that from there :-/
