Since both calcite and rhodochrosite are rhombohedral, I wouldn't rule out this simply being a rhodochrosite specimen.

Thank you for your idea. It looks like rhodochrosite on the bottom also. I see that Jordi agrees with your comment. I appreciate your taking the time to go through mindat and write me. I looked through mindat also and could not find anything that looked like this specimen either. This piece represents two generations of rhodochrosite.

Once again an impressive specimen that fits very well in your excellent quality collection, Don.
You can be quite sure that no baryte was harmed in the making of this pseudomorph. :D If it's indeed a pseudomorph in the first place, it would seem to be one after a trigonal mineral species or similar, which pretty much excludes baryte as a candidate.
Edit: I meant the rhodochrosite of course, I had overlooked the additional posts on this new page. Love the subtle purple of that Elmwood calcite too!

Very nice elbaite from Malkhan. After reading the article on this locality in the most recent Min. Rec. it will no doubt make those of us who have such specimens in our collections appreciate them that much more.

I really like that there's such a wide range in your collection: You show us a 33 cm Oppu Mine rhodo with the value of a small car which any museum would like to have. And next to this a tiny 1,7 cm pseudomorph from Ray Mine, I really appreciate that variety. Many collectors prefer a uniform size in their collection because that looks more appealing to them. My personal taste is different and rather like yours, I think specimens in different sizes look better ...
How many specimens do you have in your collection?

I want to add another thought to finish answering your question. I tend to gravitate toward specimens that I like and can afford without regard to its size. If I were to restrict my acquisitions to a particular size like some collectors do such as those who wish to enter mineral competition or because they just like a certain size, I would miss out on some minerals which I think are somewhat rare or good examples of that particular species. For example, I have a Baddeleyite after Kimzeyite with Perovskite, Anatase and Magnetite from Perovskite Hill in Magnet Cove, Arkansas. If I were to pass up on that specimen hoping that another larger one would come along in the future, I might still be waiting to get one. I think that some minerals that are desirable by me don't come in a larger size ( or not yet) ;-) Then there are other mineral specimens that come in a larger size but I am perfectly happy with a smaller one. The smaller the size the less the damage and more perfect is what my micromount friends say.
