2619 Almandine - Russell, Hampden County, Massachusetts.jpg
 Mineral: Almandine
 Locality:
Russell, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA
 Dimensions: 4.9 cm x 5.2 cm
 Description:
Several dark brown to nearly black almandine crystals to 2.1 cm associated with muscovite, quartz, and feldspar. Collected in 1885 by F. S. Johnson and his collecting partner Daniel Clark, both residents of Tyringham, Massachusetts. Johnson and Clark extracted the garnets from a pegmatite and sold or exchanged them for mineral specimens. Clark's mineral collection was donated to the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA. I had the good fortune to work at the museum during my high school years and the mineral display was the catalyst for my lifelong love of minerals.

Very nice Russell garnet. And with a great history, do you have an old label for this specimen?

Hi Tobi,
A couple of previous labels accompanied the specimen, but unfortunately none from the original collector. Who knows if the collector even made labels for his specimens? Nevertheless, I was thrilled to be able to add this piece to the collection, especially since I grew up in the area and my relationship with the museum.

Hello Michael,

very nice specimen. I don't know if you have in your collection a "Fenster" Quartz from this locality but they are very aesthetics.

Have a nice day.

Thanks for your comment Dany. I have seen a few "fenster" quartz specimens from Valais, but I do not have one in my collection currently. Do you live close to the area and have you ever collected there?

Hello Michael,

I live like one hour from Val d'Illiez but I haven't been there in order to collect Quartz. I think you need some knowledge of climbing to have a chance to find nice specimens.

Have a nice Sunday.

Thanks Tobi. I have often wondered why the Viburnum Trend district produces galena crystals with such a varied morphology, including equant cubes, cuboctahedrons, spinel twins, and elongated bars. I'm not aware of any other area that produces such a variety.

You're right, there's an amazing variety of galena crystal forms from that area. And your little galena bar is one of the prettiest I have ever seen from there, a beautiful combination.

The new wulfenites from the La Morita Mine were getting quite a bit of attention at the Denver Show. There was a plentiful supply and prices were all over the place, so it paid to shop around. From what I was told the mine is not too far distant from the famous mimetite locality of San Pedro Corralitos and the mimetites are certainly very similar to ones from that location. The mine was originally exploited for lead and silver. Currently mining operations are extracting barite for use as drilling mud. Hopefully we will see more wulfenite from this location in the future.
