PostPosted: Dec 28, 2020 16:00    Post subject: Where does this agate come from?

I recently bought this agate, which I believe is a so-called "Samyta agate" and should come from the area around Mendoza (Argentina).
But now I'm not sure whether it comes from the Malargüe area after all. These agates are commonly referred to as "Puma agates".
I know that both agate deposits are of a sedimentary nature and are very similar. But maybe there are significant differentiators.
Can anyone help me further? I would be very grateful for that.

Try a photo of the crust as that might help work out where it is from?

Thank you for your answer.

This is the back side of the agate. Color light brown and a structure like a cauliflower.

Hi to everybody!
Agates are beautiful, but very common as a mineral or quartz variety, Deducing an origin from observing a specimen and/or a photo is almost impossible. Fully agree with James.

Found this picture from my 2019 Tucson photo's, here is the location listed. Red Fox Crater Agate Botryoidal Geode, Orellanita, Patagonia, Argentina.

Hope that helps out.

Thank you to all for your answers.
No, Joseph, it is definitely not a crater agate. Crater-agates are from a volcanic source but mine is sedimentary. But thank you for the picture and your efforts.

Perhaps there will be an agate enthusiast who has the right idea.

Therefore I don't throw in the towel. Or I flip a coin.
