PostPosted: Jan 24, 2021 19:37    Post subject: Help identifying rock needed! Thank you!

Hello! Any help is greatly appreciated identifying this rock.

The photos show a raw sample versus polished.

The rocks are from the Granby River bed in British Columbia, CA. The rock is extremely heavy for its size, and very smooth when polished.

The rock appears very yellow/orange when wet, and more brownish when dry. It is translucent but not as much as a crystal.

Thanks again for your help!

No one can provide more than guesses about your stone with the information you provide. Most will suggest that it is quartz, which is probably true, but not consistent with your statement that it is very heavy for its size.

Please read the post https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=1936 which will tell you how to help us help you identify your specimen, and get you started learning about minerals and how to identify them.

Particularly, since you think it is very heavy, specific gravity would help.

Then come back to us with your observations, and hopefully we can give you a more reliable identification.

Hi there, thank you for the helpful link.

Here is some more info plus another photo.

The luster of this rock is hardly shiny at all in raw form unless it is wet or polished.

I have found some of these rocks the size of basketballs in the river where I have found them. Some of the rocks do not have any translucency while others have much more, but they are all the same mineral composition it seems.

The rock seems to have a hardness of 7, which correlates with quartz.

The rock is not fragile at all and extremely dense, with little to no porosity.

The color is very yellowish orange, if wet. But in plain daylight it will only look a dull pale brown if dry.

Hope this is more helpful. Thank you again!
