PostPosted: Feb 12, 2021 08:53    Post subject: Quartz-like but not quite, help needed.

Good day all!,
My name is Stefanie, I'm a low-key collector of gems and minerals and I would like to ask for your help in determining one of my bigger pieces.
I received a part of a collection from my friend who inherited it from her grandfather and since a lot of the labels had been thrown out (oops), neither she nor I have a clue where most of the stones are from.
At first she thought it is an amethyst but the cubic crystals tell me otherwise. I also did the scratch test and I can scratch it with a knife but not copper, so the hardness should be 5 or 6.
The crystals themselves appear a bit dull mostly, as if there was something sprayed over them, but then other pieces adjacent have a complete smooth and shiny surface like glass so I think it's naturally formed.
Almost all crystals have a cloudy inclusion which is white/light grey and the overall colour is that of a pale amethyst.
I don't know what kind of stone the base is, but I do know it's very heavy and that it's very rich in iron since there are a lot of orange rust-like parts on it.
I really hope someone can help me determine what kind of mineral this is, I've been searching online for days now but I keep ending up with amethyst.
Thanks for helping in advance!

I feel like a fool for not thinking of this any sooner... but you're absolutely right! Thank you for showing me the obvious, haha!

Probably from northern England, as I think some of the crystals are twinned
