About three decades ago, I received some pieces with historical labels from before 1900 as a gift. Unfortunately, the only information about the old collection was, that it originates from before 1900 and belonged to a South Tyrolean aristocrat and collector, but no name was available.

Normally, clay minerals are no collector minerals. But here is a huge piece of a Palygorskite-Sepiolite mixture (local name: "Bergleder" = "Mountain leather") from the old mines at Monteneve in South Tyrol (the highest ore mining area in Europe between 2.000 and 2.650 m altitude).

| Thank you, Robert and Bob, for the positive response. Clay minerals are rarely found in collectable pieces. I only posess a small piece of Nacrite in rhyolite, that I can study with a loupe, and another piece of white pure Palygorskite from dolostone clefts (looks like white mountain leather). Other clay minerals can be very beautiful, if you can examine them by an SEM....

| A very interesting occurrence of Marcasite: These crystal aggregates originate from reinforcement steel, that had contact with aggressive mine waters. The reinforcement comes from concrete of a demolished air raid defence emplacement higher on the mountain. The broken concrete was then thrown into the underlying mine shaft at the end of WW II. The crystals grew in a time span of at most 60 years! Two pieces of sulfidized reinforcement steel grid (evidence!) are decomposed in the meantime due to pyrite disease, while this one luckily survived! |
