PostPosted: Oct 07, 2009 13:50    Post subject: Re: For the fluorite lovers: What are your favourite localities?

Hi again:

Thank to your contribution I will be able to improve the list. Jordi has mentioned Melchor Musquiz, Cohauhila, Mexico, one of the my favourites. Perfect. Roger also has written Papiol, Spain. I pretended to do it today. Well, we are drawing up the list. You have shared photos too.

I'm going to give my reasons for Melchor Musquiz: their pieces show characteristic stepped pattern I love. It's the perfection of the cubic system: each cube formed by dozens of microcubes. I think it could be a fractal structure as far as I understand maths. Fractal beauty and art too. The colour saturation as well. Some pieces are almost opaque. Odd beauty.

I'll remake the list simplifying localities in a few days (thanks Jessie for the comments about Wearsdale and Mts. Pennines). The same for Pakistan. But I am still dubious about the localities from Illinois USA ¿can we put them all into one group?

I suggest we can add localities, preferences, photos and comments until the end of the next week (or sooner if the matter declines). After that we can vote via mp.

Regards,
Antonio

No one has mentioned the fluorites on celestite blades up to 20cm from Muzquiz. These are the real classics from this area.

For Les, fluorite on celestite, Mina El Tule, Coahiula, Mexico, 14x9x3 cm overall size. Classic specimens and a rather unique combination.

Hello Peter and Hello Naydia too,

Thanks to you Peter I know of the beautiful Malberget ,Sweden Fluorite. I have a killer from there, a full size T/N of outstanding deep green color. Now after Peter and myslef there aren't enough of these to make a market. I saw two more ( both sold by Peter ) and last year a superb large miniture of finest color.

So my fav locality is Malberget Sweden followed by the delicate bluish phantoms in yellow from Penfield NY and lastly the purple phantoms from Ohio.

Jesse! Very nice combination. I never saw the like from there!
It is very RARE to see something new . THANKS!!!

Jim keep your great TN : )
As you correctly state: Too few to make a market. During the 27 years since the great pocket I have let a few very good friends who have shown great interest and taste have a specimen!
All of them I would trade or buy back immediately : )

At Nordmark at one of the dumps Roland Eriksson of Långban Sweden found a very nice small pocket of green octahedrons on smoky quartz and white calcite (Late 1960s). There are just a couple of hand size specimens and a couple of small ones. They all fit in two hands. They are no killers like the Malmberegt, but interesting just as information to serious collectors of information. I saw them for the first time in 1973 in his museum in Långban and immediately fell in love with them. I have one of them.

In Norway there was a great pocket in late 1970s with 2-6 cm light purplish fluorite octahedrons on elongated clear greyish white quartz crystals at Glomsrudkollen, to the W of Oslo. There were also a few very small but incredibly beautiful purple fluorites in a mine to the w of Drammen growing on dt small white calcite crystals.

Booth these localities had so few specimens, I have 2+1, but interesting.

Wow!! Superb specimen. I haven't seen anything like that before. Let me look up my notes - I'm at work now- to distinguish both mines: Tule and Sabinal. I think the specimens from each of them are quite differents to put them into an only group. I remember specimens from Tule are more clear and only violet edges. Anyway your fluorite with celestite is stunning.

The localities and specifications posted after my previous list will be taken into consideration for the final list.

Regards

To Carles,

Please, what about helping me with the localities in Asturias, Spain? I'm a recent collector and your experience and the other veteran collector's is definitive.

Cheers

PS: there are typing mistakes in the previous message ("distinguish" and "both", sorry)

Hi Antonio, all,

maybe we could add to the list
Moscona Mine, Solís, Asturias, Spain
Buxier-les-Mines, France (famous for spherical fluos)
Münstertal (Münster valley), Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, GER (very complex crystals)

Attached a Solis specimen,

cheers
Roger

Hi Antonio!

I would be glad to help, but the problem is that, although I had been visiting the Asturian mines three times, it was in the period 1975-1981, so my background about this topic is rather outdated, unfortunately.

I understand that Jordi Fabre, who is really an expert, is right now too busy to get involved, but in the FMF Spanish side there are several members with a great deal of knowledge about the Asturian mineralogy. If you didn't know who they are, just ask Jordi.

Perhaps my best contribution to this topic is my posting photos from some of my specimens.

Thanks Roger and Carles:

Carles, your photos are the spanish spice of the thread. Astonishing spanish fluorites. I know Jordi can help us with the spanish localities. I only tried to free him from one more task. However he has offered himself to give as much help as I need.

Roger, it's obvious you are very fond of fluorites and have a wide knowledge. Your specimens are superb too. I'll try to answer your quiz later. Moscona has been an unforgiven oversight. I will add your suggestions.

Take care

I think it is time for some one to sponsor an international Fluorite case. An invitational with generous terms so any one owning a really good to superb Fluorite would be able to participate. It would be a wonderful display for sure.

Another nice fluorite from La Collada

110 mm x 86 mm, a typical {100} {110} combination. The rhombododecahedral {110} faces are not etched but stepped. More info at https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=2866#2866
