That's right, not too common. The more I like this sample, the fluorites are well developed with an interesting structure (kind of intergrown cuboctahedral crystals?) and have a wonderful dark blue colour in contrast with the associated minerals. Panasqueira is not a main focus of mine but I like the minerals from that deposit - especially when they are combined in such a colourful piece!

Tobi

Pity Panasqueira is not your mine too. :)

I will be posting some pictures of another Fluorite specimen soon in which the Fluorite occurs as frosted blue cubic crystals with Fluorapatite.

We also have some very nice Cassiterite specimens from Panasqueira too, nothing like the material we have from Viloco, but still an important addition to our suite of Panasqueira minerals.

PostPosted: Oct 28, 2021 13:18    Post subject: The Crystal Shop - Silvia's Collection

Mineral Collecting at Panasqueira

During most of the life of the Mine, its owners and operators have had a strict no mineral collecting policy. One of the conditions of employment requires all workers in the mine to have bags, helmets and work clothing checked before they leave the mine.

In Barroca Grande, the mine operates a mineral shop. Mine workers are encouraged to take any specimens they find in the mine during the course of their working activities to the crystal shop. The proceeds of the sale of the minerals so found benefit the shareholders and the local community. This is a really fine win-win situation for all parties.

The specimen has lustrous black sharp crystals of Cassiterite to 2 cm in size with bright metallic crystals of Arsenopyrite to 2 cm. Gemmy green tabular crystals of Fluorapatite to 1.5 cm are scattered across the backside of the piece with Muscovite and Chalcopyrite. The Fluorapatite crystals exhibit bright orange fluorescence in the presence of UVA light.

Thanks Michael.

We have tried very hard to get collector quality material of all the significant minerals from Panasqueira.

Our emphasis has been on quality pieces that highlight the unique paragenesis that has occurred at the deposit. Ferberite, Siderite, Sphalerite and Fluorapatite are among our best. We have a few pictures of some of our Cassiterite, Marcasite, Pyrite, Fluorite, Topaz and Goyazite specimens still to upload. We still consider these significant as they tell a lot about how the deposit was formed.

PostPosted: Nov 02, 2021 17:16    Post subject: In and about the Panasqueira mines – A pictorial Adventure; Silvia's Collection

Treatment of water from the Panasqueira Mine.

Quality control of the mine water is very high, and twice a week samples are taken and analysed in the mill laboratory. Once a month samples are taken and sent to an independent laboratory. These results are checked every 6 months by the local authorities.

The original Salgueira water treatment plant was designed in 1957 for a peak capacity of 300 cubic meters of water per hour. In 2011 the plant was upgraded to handle 500 cubic meters of water per hour.

The plant comprises treatment tanks, multilevel building, and a lime storage and hopper system.

Lime is mixed with a small quantity of water by gravity feed from storage tanks. Manganese and other metals are precipitated out using suitable flocculants in the form of sludge. Precipitated sludge is then pumped to the tailings pond, and treated water is either discharged to the nearby creek or held in storage tanks for use in the mill or mine.

Silvia, thank you for the information and photos, I always love to get background stories and footage of famous mineral localities! Great to have someone new here in the community with so much knowledge and material of one of Europe's great localities!

Thank you Don.

The pictures are taking using very basic equipment. My partner and I use a very inexpensive Coolpix 20.1MP camera, a few 6500K led house lights and a white plastic light box 300mm square.

We ignore what our own eyes see, and let the camera LCD view finder define what we see. This way if the camera sees a good shot, it will also produce a good photo.

To achieve good depth of field for close-up shots as many as 80 shots are taken at different focal points, and then stacked using software. Here we aim to get every aspect of the photograph in focus.

The three important things to get a good photo are lighting, lighting and lighting. The plastic box enables us to exclude all exterior light so we can control the interior light of the box.

If there is enough interest we could put together an article on how we take each photo, but please note that we are amateur photographers.

Silvia, I am interested in learning more about how you are taking your pictures, although I don't have any stacking software. 🙂

Hello Don:

I am more than happy to share, and my partner is more than happy to help to – he does most of the hard work :)

The camera we use is a Coolpix A100

We use a standard tripod, nothing fancy

The camera we use for the close-ups is a USB based microscope/camera with a long focal length. This enables the photographer to focus on any part of the specimen and move the focus in and out without changing the primary focus on the specimen. In most close-up photographs using a traditional optical microscope the background is often very much out of focus, but with this camera we can take multiple shots involving background, specimen and foreground. We take up to 80 shots and move from the focused background to the focused foreground. We then stack the individual shots using Helicon Focus. The result is the sort of pictures I have uploaded. Note that we also use the light box to do this so we can have much greater control over lighting.

The USB Microscope/Camera was once a very expensive piece of equipment, but now you can pick them up Ex-China for less than $200USD.

I will organize a few photos – you should find them interesting.

Thanks James.

We have many fine specimens from other European localities too – Romania, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Russia – along with fine specimens from Morocco, Congo, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, China and Australia.

At the moment Panasqueira is the focus, and we hope to create a picture book on the mine based on our collection and the photos we have uploaded to FMF. We were thinking about self-publishing it in A4 landscape mode on premium glossy paper with one picture per page with detailed explanation. Like our FMF contributions all areas will be covered – history, geography, mining and our minerals.

When done we are more than happy to provide it in PDF format for free. I was a teacher for many years, and it is hard to stop being one!

I think everyone who reads this is eagerly awaiting your publication as much as I do. I'm not even that much into Panasqueira as a personal collecting focus, but your appearance in the forum changed this during the last weeks :-)

Being a teacher, I know exactly what you mean. In this case, I'm the student and I'm eager for more Panasqueira knowledge!

Best regards
Tobi

Hello Tobi

The mineral diversity of the Panasqueira ore body makes the mine one of the great mineral localities of the modern era.

The book will be in the form of a landscape format picture book. The emphasis will be on pictures and diagrams along with a little discussion of each item shown.

PostPosted: Nov 08, 2021 18:56    Post subject: Cubic crystals of Fluorite - Silvia's Collection

Collector quality specimens of Fluorite were never common at Panasqueira. Thus it was a challenge to obtain a matrix specimen of Fluorite displaying distinct crystals of Fluorite, along with a few other minerals common at the Panasqueira ore-body.

The specimen we acquired contains frosty translucent purple crystals of Fluorite to 2 cm on edge across the top of a crystallized Muscovite and Siderite matrix. Tabular green Fluorapatite crystals to 2 cm are present, as well as micro Pyrite.

The Fluorapatite exhibits bright orange fluorescence in the presence of UVA light.
