Outstanding and well balanced specimen from China. Good contrast between black and colorless crystals.

Thank you Carles, I consider this specimen a true highlight and another centerpiece of my quartz collection. The contrast is one aspect but this specimen also has the "horizon" - according to Steve Smale - you often told me about. The photo doesn't show this but the attached video gives a good impression of the three-dimensional quality and shape of the specimen. I see many of these where the quartzes are damaged or broken off but this one is in quite good condition for Lechang.

I'm glad you like it, best regards
Tobi

Tobi, Congratulations on acquiring this beautiful piece from Lechang. I love the presentation and it's remarkable how little damage is apparent compared to most pieces from this locality.

I always enjoy looking at Rudolf's show displays - he has exquisitely prepared specimens.

Actually I would never dare to compete with the photos of professional dealers, especially not when it's Rudi Watzl and his team from Saphira Minerals, they make a great job in photographing their minerals ... but I think they made not the best photo of the nice hematite/quartz specimen that is my latest addition ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=77073#77073 ) because it does not show the sculptural shape of the specimen. I just found the time to try a photo on my own and I think it's worth being an additional photo to my last post :-)

Very nice specimen Tobi. I have not been on FMF for long but do you have a liking for specimens from Dal'negorsk?

Hi Silvia, you are right, I love Dal'negorsk, it's one of my favourite mineral localities. Sure, not a locality for rarities, but I love things like fluorite, quartz, galena and calcite - and Dal'negorsk is a premium source for those minerals.

First specimen 2022: I never had a gold specimen in my collection, it was my dream since I started collecting minerals. Now I finally got one - from our Grandmaster Jordi :-)

New specimen, a real surprise ;-)

Actually polished agates or polished pieces in general are nothing that interests me as a collector. The last time I had some of these in my collection is long ago, it was the first time as a child when you start collecting rocks and you gather the usual suspects like some tiny Huanzala pyrites, tumbled rocks or the typical stuff from Brazil like rock crystal, amethyst or agate with no further locality information ... but since I consider myself a "serious" collector, never again there was a piece of agate that caught my eye. And if someone would have told me recently that I would add a polished agate specimen to my collection in 2022, the answer would have been no, definitely not! ...

... But when I saw this piece, I could not resist, it was love at first sight. I like its aesthetics and the size of 23 x 20 cm makes it really impressive. So this is a surprise addition for me, I immediately fell in love with it ;-)

Nice agate Tobi. Nothing wrong with a special agate or two in the collection of a serious collector. I probably have a dozen or so and I can appreciate looking at the various structures that are often visible.

Nothing wrong with having a polished piece or two in a collection. I have several cut and polished slabs in my collection. Without the specimens being sliced and polished, you wouldn't be able to see the individual minerals or their associations.

Nice agate Tobi.

I also agree with the view that having polished specimens in a collection is fine. My partner and I have many malachite specimens in our collection. The only way we can highlight the internal beauty of Malachite is to display a polished slice showing the green ‘bulls eye’ feature of Malachite.

Michael, Joseph and Silvia, thank you for your encouraging comments ;-)

It felt somehow "wrong" to purchase cut & polished material but I know that this agate is worthy of my collection. And you're right, the beauty of some rocks like agate geodes can only be revealed by cutting and polishing it. And maybe it's never wrong to purchase a "love at first sight" specimen. Good to know I'm not the only crystal fan here who fell in love with a polished piece ;-)

Btw, here are some photos of the Mountain named Fullus near Aouli where the agate was found: https://www.mineralienatlas.de/lexikon/index.php/MediaDataShow?galerie=lokation&backlink=1&lokationid=9102

Still thrilled by the beauty of the agate from Aouli and encouraged by your words, I did it again - I added a smaller agate with vivid colours from that area to my collection:

It is true that I am not a friend of agates, but I must admit that both are really beautiful and, if you like them, you have done very well. Enjoy!

After measuring the specimen I found out that the size provided by the previous owner was not correct, the specimen is larger and measures 25 x 22 cm. I can't edit my post anymore, could an Admin please change the size information both in the text and in the description?

Thanks!

Fixed,
