Description: |
Mass: 339 g MIM number:1880 Grayish crystal, altered by the radioactivity of thorium, showing nevertheless some faces typical of the quadratic symmetry of thorite, isomorphous to zircon. This crystal is considered very large for the species. Because thorite is highly radioactive, specimens such as this one are often metamict: This is a condition found in radioactive minerals that results from the destructive effects of its own radiation on its crystal lattice. The effect can destroy a crystal lattice completely while leaving the outward appearance unchanged. Photographer: AINU / Augustin de Valence Ex collection Jean Béhier (France) |

|
Dimensions: | 6 x 5 x 8.5 cm / main crystal: 1.6 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 256 g MIM number:1907 Transparent, sharply formed and well separated dodecahedral crystals of beautiful orange color, on a matrix made of fibrous diopside crystals with a greenish color creating a beautiful contrast with the grossular. Photographer: AINU / Augustin de Valence |

Mineral: | Fluorite |
Locality: | Erongo Mountain, Usakos, Erongo Region, Namibia
|
Dimensions: | 24 x 18 x 34 cm / main crystal: 4.5 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 9000 g MIM number:1908 Block made of microcline crystals twinned after the Carlsbad law (up to 6 cm) and schorl (up to 7 cm) covered with well separated cubic and transparent fluorite crystals of an astonishing emerald green color creating a beautiful contrast with the microcline. The cubes of fluorites have beveled faces; some are traversed by fine schorl crystals. The microcline and schorl were formed first and then leached by the hydrothermal fluids which left them in this altered condition and subsequently deposited the fluorites. Mineral: | Arsentsumebite |
Locality: | Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia
|
Dimensions: | 11 x 6 x 8 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 674 g MIM number:1909 Block of tabular azurite crystals (the largest measuring 2.2 cm) covered on one side with elongated cylindrical groups made of emerald green microcrystals of arsentsumebite creating a beautiful contrast. The arsentsumebite results from an epimorphous growth on mimetite that was dissolved at a later stage. This is one of the best known samples of this rare mineral, which is both arsenate and sulphate. Mineral: | Wulfenite |
Locality: | Rowley Mine, Theba, Painted Rock District, Painted Rock Mountains, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
|
Dimensions: | 26 x 10 x 15 cm / main crystal: 2.2 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 3850 g MIM number:1910 Very bright orange wulfenite tablets interspersed with tufts of prismatic hexagonal red crystals of mimetite (up to 4 mm) creating an astonishing contrast with the wulfenite. It is one of the largest and most complete samples of this mine which is difficult to access and where wulfenite grows in very narrow veins. Photographer: FMI / James Elliott |
