PostPosted: Mar 10, 2023 22:06    Post subject: adularia locale?

I purchased this adularia with some chlorite coating years ago. It has been stored away and I have lost any location information. Don't even remember where I purchased it.

The longest dimension is 4 cm and it is a well formed crystal.

No real idea of where it is from. When I unpacked it recently, I vaguely remembered Spain, but I don't see any sites in Spain with anything similar. My best guesses would be somewhere in Europe, possibly the USA, but I'm just speculating.

Any thoughts on where this might be from?

for me it looks like Alpine material. (Switzerland, France, Italy, Austria,...?.)

The specimen is typical for adularia with chlorite coating from an alpine-cleft-type metamorphic environment. The best known of these are in the Swiss/French/Austrian alps, but also from the Alchuri area in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. Without further information it would be difficult to get more specific.

I would say from the Canton of Uri, Switzerland, but is just a guess:

Good guess, but similar pieces also come from Valais or from some places in the Hohe Tauern mountains in Austria. But Canton Uri was my first thought, too. Nearly impossible to decide...

I've been reading the responses (thank you) and thinking about this, and I now vaguely recall noting that it was from Italy when I purchased it.

Is it just as likely (or less likely?) that it might have come from the Italian Alps somewhere near the Swiss border?

Could possibly be from the Sudtirol in the Trentino-Alto Adige region.

I think Switzerland would be the most likely, but there are many other possibilities in the Alps and the Himalayas, so the only thing one could say with certainty is "Alpine-type vein".

Hi to everybody!
Don't forget the name Adularia comes from the Mount Adula, in Canton Ticino, Switzerland! Another possible origin could be the Val di Vizze / Pfitscher Tal, South Tyrol!

I agree with the other answers. For sure an alpine specimen but no chance of finding the exact locality. There are many places in Austria and Switzerland and maybe some in Italy and France where the piece could be from. And maybe from somewhere else. So Alfredo's idea of labeling it "from an alpine-type vein" is the best you can do.

Regards
Tobi
