Locality: | Sakoany deposit, Katsepy Commune, Mitsinjo District, Boeny Region, Mahajanga (Majunga) Province, Madagascar | |
|
Dimensions: | 16 x 16 x 16 cm / main crystal: 9.4 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 3850 g MIM number:1971 Beautiful divergent sheaf of blue, perfectly formed and pointed transparent crystals, developed around a large, richly faceted main crystal, inside a geode. The shape of these crystals is unusual for this mine, which generally produces crystals with chisel shaped terminations. The celestine crystals of Madagascar, among the most beautiful known, are found in geodes that are old gas bubbles formed by the decomposition of organic matter contained in 65 million years old marls and sandstones. I too am a big galena fan and when I first looked at the photo my first impression was - "I have one like this - why would the MIM want it?" - THEN I looked at the size of the specimen and the size of its blinding crystals - OK, it may be the best in the world.

bob | That is what I call the LaMIMMME - the Looking at MIM Museum Minerals Effect:
You take a look and you are stunned by the beauty and perfection of the specimens ... than you read the size information and you are even more stunned and completely awestruck when you realize the dimension of these masterpieces.
Congratulations, Bob, you have been successfully LaMIMMMerized ;-)
