The Hunterian Museum in Glasgow is open again so I must get back and visit it to see what they have done to the mineral collection. For those who are interested to see some of what they have without a visit you can search the collection and see photos of some of the specimens by using this link:

This is a wonderful museum curated by a delightful man, John Faithful. Have spent many happy hours there...the Lanarkshire lead fields suites they have are staggering!

I managed to spend a few hours in the museum this summer so attach some photos. They do not allow flash photography and I had no tripod but see what you think.

Sapphires Mull, Scotland And just to end the report - sapphire collecting on Mull with wet suits! It brings a whole new approach to mineral collecting. It was VERY cold but we did find some gemmy sapphires (well one rock with some 3mm gem ones in it). It was SO cold, but she does love the sea no matter how cold it is and I love my minerals. |

Thanks for nice report! I have been a few times to the Hunterian Museum, love the University building itself and the view. When I swim the waters of Scotland people always look as if I am crazy! Clear fresh waters! but I never had a wet suit.

Hi James!
Where are the sapphires then? Still inside the river? Or did you succeed in picking up any of them? If so, I would be so curious to see any of them! it's always a potential European gem, different from the Burmese or Cingalese ones!
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

Riccardo
They are not in the water but in the house. That said there are no visible crystals (yet) as they are in a matrix from the dyke they were in. I will have to see if I can release them.
