Mineral: | Fluorapatite |
Locality: | Ganadao (Gandao Hill), Mohmand District, Peshawar Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan
|
Dimensions: | 16.5 x 2 x 6.5 cm / main crystal: 16.2 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 421 g
MIM number:2053
Large, elongated, transparent, shiny and very well-formed tabular crystal, rich in facets, pale pink in the upper part, and greenish in the lower part due to the inclusion of actinolite needles. The formation of these apatites in Pakistan is similar to that of the apatites found in the Alps, with the same type of inclusions, but the crystals such as this one have reached much larger dimensions.

Mineral: | Epidote on Calcite |
Locality: | Pampa Blanca, Ticrapo District, Castrovirreyna Province, Huancavelica Department, Peru
|
Dimensions: | 24 x 19 x 12 cm / main crystal: 6.4 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 3700 g MIM number:2090 Plate covered on its upper surface with small calcite crystals studded with vertical diverging fans of black and shiny epidote crystals. The black & white contrast with the calcite carpet is quite unusual for this mine. In strong light, the terminations of the epidote crystals actually appear translucent and green in a certain direction, but amber in another direction (strong dichroism). Photographer: Joe Budd |

Mineral: | Zircon |
Locality: | Pare Mountains, Same District, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania
|
Dimensions: | 4.5 x 4.5 x 14 cm / main crystal: 13.7 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 477 g MIM number:2091 Long, dark red, very well formed crystal with perfectly rectangular cross section and sharp, facet-rich termination. A small side zircon crystal has developed at its base, and a piece of cream-colored matrix (probably feldspar) is present at its side. It is unusual to find such a large and well-formed crystal for this species. Photographer: FMI / Federico Picciani |

Mineral: | Brookite with Anatase and Quartz |
Locality: | Ghad prospection, Kharan District, Balochistan (Baluchistan), Pakistan
|
Dimensions: | 5.5 x 5.5 x 5 cm / main crystal: 3.9 cm |
Description: |
Ghad Mine, Kharan district, Balochistan, Pakistan
Mass: 32 g MIM number:2092 Thin plate of small quartz crystals on one side of which has developed a magnificent divergent set resembling a flower consisting of many transparent amber-colored brookite blades. The underside is studded with several black and shiny bipyramidal anatase crystals (the largest measuring 1.2 cm), which are actually translucent dark blue under strong light. It is quite unusual to have on the same sample these two varieties of titanium oxide (anatase and brookite) which form at quite different temperatures. Mineral: | Albite (variety anorthoclase) |
Locality: | Erebus Mount, Ross Island, Ross Dependency, Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica
|
Dimensions: | 10 x 5 x 10 cm / main crystal: 5.1 cm |
Description: |
Mount Erebus (3,800 m), Antarctique
Mass: 160 g MIM number:2095 Porous black lava block on which several grey crystals of anorthoclase (potassium-rich variety of albite) have formed. The main crystal presents a Carlsbad twin. This specimen was collected by volcanologist Haroun Tazieff in 1974, two years after the last eruption of this volcano, begun in 1972, and still ongoing, making it the most active volcano in Antarctica. Mount Erebus has been an active stratovolcano for about 1.3 million years. Subject to the polar climate, its average temperature varies between -50 ° C in winter and -20 ° C in summer. Mineral: | Pyrite |
Locality: | Ampliación a Victoria Mine, De Alcarama Range, Navajún, Comarca Cervera, La Rioja, Spain
|
Dimensions: | 7.5 x 8 x 16.5 cm / main crystal: 11.2 cm |
Description: |
Mass: 1250 g MIM number:2096 Large parallelepiped with an upper stepped termination, surmounted by a perfect cubic crystal studded with a smaller cubic crystal on one of its spaces. This very architectural group is intact and all its faces are smooth and very lustrous. The parallelepipedic habit of pyrite crystals is rare in this mine, and its association with the more classical cubic habit even rarer. Photographer: AINU / Augustin de Valence |
