30 of 63 - The Porcelain Tower at the 2024 Nanjing Show
The Porcelain Tower of Nanjing was once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World. This recreated pagoda - the original was destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion in 1851 - stands in the center of what was once the Grand Baoen Temple - the Royal Temple of the Ming Dynasty.
What remains now is an incredible mix of preserved ruins and beautifully modern, immersive displays. This was one of my favorite cultural experiences while I was in Nanjing and both the history and artistic interpretations blend into a perfect mix of education and stimulating encounters.

31 of 63 - On The Streets at the 2024 Nanjing Show
On our way to dinner I just had to stop and share my overall thoughts of the street crowds in Nanjing. Perhaps the one thing that consistently surprised me about this city of 9.3 million people - exceeding the population of America's largest city (New York) with a population of 8.8 million people.

32 of 63 - Outdoor Signage at the 2024 Nanjing Show
Sometimes the cost of technology becomes so low that every one and any one can afford it. And when it's technology that we don't readily have in the West, it becomes eye-opening and refreshing.
In this clip we make a note of the incredibly low-cost of ownership of outdoor electronic displays to the point that small restaurants can afford to have these displays to decorate the outside of their establishments.
It looks great and boy do I wish I could have this for my studio in Tucson!!!

33 of 63 - Hot Pot Dinner at the 2024 Nanjing Show
Hot Pot. We have them here in Hawai'i and my wife and I LOVE them. What it is is different broths that are brought to your table, placed on a burner and allowed to boil.
Then, you place different meats, vegetables and things like noodles and tofu into the boiling broth, allow it to cook and then eat it straight from the broth.
It's absolutely delicious BUT I've never had a Hot Pot like this one in Nanjing!!! Dr. Gene Meieran joins us for dinner as we have Nanjing-style Hot Pot.....and we pretend it's Gene's birthday. A great time had by all!!!!

34 of 63 - Nanjing Massacre Museum at the 2024 Nanjing Show
This was the toughest thing I did on the entire trip. I first heard about the Nanjing Massacre about 15 years ago. It is often called one of the most brutal campaigns of torture and destruction of the human spirit in wartime history.
The Imperial Japanese Army invaded Nanjing in December of 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. What followed was the indiscriminate torture and killing of over 300,000 Chinese citizens and the rape and mutilation of approximately 80,000 children and women of all ages.
In 1997, Chinese author Iris Chang released her book, The Rape of Nanjing, outlining the details of this horrific event based on interviews she conducted with her grandparents who, miraculously, survived the Nanjing invasion.
I got really emotional before I even entered the museum and knew that I most likely wouldn't do any filming inside the museum. This video is in no way an in-depth commentary on the museum or of the event. It was actually the only thing I knew about Nanjing before I was hired to document the mineral show so visiting the museum was certainly on my list.
I found myself most drawn to the various statues and remarkable pieces of artwork in the extensive gardens of the museum and it is those pieces that I share in this video. The photographs of the atrocities are something I cannot bear to reproduce.
The final monument that you see, as you're leaving the compound, is a monument to a single word. Peace. A remarkable message left behind by a people who experienced everything except that one word.

35 of 63 - Lunch at Impressions in the 1912 area at the 2024 Nanjing Show
After a long and hard morning at the Nanjing Massacre Museum, we take an early lunch and head over to Impressions Restaurant in the 192 Street area of Nanjing. With menus in Chinese AND English, it’s easy to pick a few FANTASTIC dishes and we gorge ourselves on duck dumplings, black rice dumplings, salted duck (a Nanjing specialty) and some sweet lotus root soup.
Everything was FANTASTIC and, after we eat, I film us walking out of the restaurant so that you viewers can get an idea of the ambiance and interior decoration of this place that ABSOLUTELY deserves more visits in the future.

36 of 63 - 1912 Street at the 2024 Nanjing Show
Named after the year the Republic of China was established, 1912 Street is THE number one spot for nightlife, drinking and dancing when it comes to Nanjing.
We wander around parts of 1912 Street during the day - right after lunch - and get an idea of the energy and features of this top-visitor spot in the city. Obviously the night time is when this area REALLY comes alive but we may have to wait for a future trip before we see the best of 1912 Steet.
37 of 63 - Rain Flower Pavillon at the 2024 Nanjing Show
You’ve heard me comment about the agates and the Nanjing story of the Rain Flowers in a few of the previous videos. Well, in this video we go to the source of all those stories - The Rain Flower Pavillion in the heart of Nanjing.
As the story goes, the Buddhist Master Yu Guang was preaching the words of Buddhism to the public about 1,500 years ago. The gods were listening to his preaching and were so moved by the eloquence and beauty of his words that they brought forth a rain of flowers from the Heavens. When the flowers hit the ground, they turned into beautiful agates which have been found and collected from the ground in the area of this pavillon. In fact, there are STILL people who have little booths set up in the streets to sell these agates.
So collecting agates is still such a huge part of the cultural history of Nanjing. So we head off to visit the Pavillon itself to see what tidbits of history we can pick up on our trip.

38 of 63 - Environment Comments at the 2024 Nanjing Show
So we’ve all heard stories of the smog problem in China but how real is that on this trip to Nanjing?
One of the things I wanted to report on during this trip was the smog, the weather, the temperature and the overcrowding that we’ve all heard about in China. I was actually surprised on more than a few of these topics.
Check out this short video to hear for yourself what I experienced on this trip.

39 of 63 - The Nanjing Museum at the 2024 Nanjing Show
The Nanjing Museum is THE number one cultural museum in the city. And the fact that it’s next door to the hotel makes this almost a no-brainer to visit.
However, after I arrived in Nanjing, I learned that you need to reserve tickets AT LEAST one week in advance due to the popularity of the museum and that the next available date was after my departure. However, my miracle worker guide Alina was able to somehow arrange a last minute ticket for us so we were able to go.
What we discovered when we arrived there was something I certainly could never have predicted and it took me completely by surprise making this a MUST-RETURN venue for my next trip to Nanjing.

40 of 63 - Taking the Nanjing Subway at the 2024 Nanjing Show
Subways work the same all over the world. Train lines are named according to the final stop on the line and, armed with that knowledge, if you’ve taken one subway, you can pretty much take any subway.
In this clip, we jump on the Nanjing subway - located only a five minute walk from our hotel - to get to a really popular area of town where we have plans to eat dinner.
Man, was I surprised!!! It was SO incredibly clean and efficient with signs AND announcements in both Chinese AND English!!!! It’s a SUPER easy way to make your way around the city INCLUDING a subway stop right at the Expo Center!!

41 of 63 - Duck Blood Soup at the 2024 Nanjing Show
One of favorite things to do when I travel is to partake in the local culinary specialties where I travel. For Nanjing, duck is the #1 most popular food with the slogan, “No duck escapes Nanjing” found all around the city.
Well, when it comes to the most popular duck dishes in Nanjing, Duck Blood Soup rises to the top of the list. So Elina and I are joined by some friends as we head out to one of the best duck blood soup restaurants in the city.
And yes, we were all surprised at how absolutely delicious it was!!!

42 of 63 - The Confucius Temple at the 2024 Nanjing Show
While we didn’t go out in the 1912 area at night, we DID go out on a Friday night at the Confucius Temple and man, WHAT A BLAST!!!!
The people, the energy and the fun were all kicking on all cylinders on Friday night. Take a look and catch up with us next year at the Confucius Temple!!!!

44 of 63 - Saturday Crowd at the 2024 Nanjing Show
it’s the first day of the weekend and the crowds we were looking for earlier in the week have now shown up. Interest is high, people are engaged and interaction is happening!!!
46 of 63 - Zheng Jianrong Mining Crystal Art Museum at the 2024 Nanjing Show
Another Chinese mineral dealer whose booth is set up is a very Western-style manner with the vast majority of their specimens on display with lucite bases.
They had a couple of very unusual pieces and a whole lot of beautiful Fluorite specimens from China. A nice offering of pieces in all sizes and colors.
Again, if you were at the Denver Show or even the Munich Show, you would expect to see display cases like this on the floor.
47 of 63 - Carved Mammoth Ivory at the 2024 Nanjing Show
In Asia, carved ivory is a major collectible. For most of the world, this means that elephants are hunted to near extinction for the source material and this has led to ivory being banned in many countries.
With this Chinese dealer it appears that their carvings are made from ancient mammoth tusks and, while not being a big thing among Westerners, we stop to take a closer look at the beauty and skill of the work on display.
48 of 63 - The Arkenstone at the 2024 Nanjing Show
The Arkenstone is a well-known, American-based company and so it's no surprise that there are here at the 2024 Nanjing Show ESPECIALLY since they also have a Shanghai division which is what's on display here.
In this video, we take a look at their booth design as we also look at the material they've brought to the show - and it's not quite what you'd expect. Knowing that the Chinese market tends to favor larger specimens, The Arkenstone put on display things that you wouldn't normally see in their booth at the Western shows. They also know that color attracts and you'll see some examples of how true that comment is in this video.
In short, a very interesting look at a company operating very strategically within a market they know pretty well.
49 of 63 - Children's Activities at the 2024 Nanjing Show
One of the big draws to bringing families in to a mineral show is to make sure that there are some child-specific activities with which the children can engage. They do a great job of it in Munich and they're doing a great job of it here in Nanjing too.
The entire side wall of the Expo Center is focused on all kinds of different activities for kids. And judging by the number of kids attending, it's a huge success.

51 of 63 - Dinosaurs at the 2024 Nanjing Show
Fossils. It's in the name of the show - China International Mineral Gemstone and Fossil Expo (CIMGE) - so we'd be remiss if we didn't do AT LEAST ONE video on fossils.
And while I don't really know a lot about fossils, I do know big dinosaurs when I see them.
In this clip, we take a real quick look at some BIG DINOSAURS at the Nanjing Show!
52 of 63 - Chinese National Geography at the 2024 Nanjing Show
The name National Geographic has instant recognition around the world for their incredible magazine and innovative, nature-based television programming they've done.
In China, a similar organization exists - with equally as powerful a brand in the Chinese market - called Chinese National Geography and they are one of the sponsors of the Nanjing Show.
We're outside their booth on the Expo floor for this video clip.

53 of 63 - Crystal World at the 2024 Nanjing Show
In this clip, we're back on the main Avenue at the Expo Center and we visit Crystal World's booth to see what they're bringing to market.
Again, we see an interesting mix of Chinese style collecting and Western style collecting. There are A LOT of nice specimens mounted in the Chinese wooden bases but also a lot of pieces mounted on the Western-style lucite bases - all displayed within modern, Western-style cases.
As expected, a lot of Chinese Fluorites but a really good mix of a lot of other collectible minerals including Calcite, a great Copper and some nice Quartz.
****************************************************************************************************
54 of 63 - Shin Ging Wa Shoo at the 2024 Nanjing Show
We're visiting another Chinese dealer here on the main Avenue of the Expo Center.
I'm REALLY impressed by the quality and variety of specimens on display here - ESPECIALLY the Malachites!!!!
This one dealer has probably the best variety of Malachite specimens I found at the show and pretty much all of them are mounted in the Chinese wooden decorative mounts. But that makes this dealer's inventory the PERFECT inventory to really talk about these wooden bases and whether or not there's a place in the display of Western collections for them.
My answer? You'll have to watch the episode to find out!

55 of 63 - Meieranite at the 2024 Nanjing Show
There's a VERY short list of living collectors for whom mineral species have been named. And yes, my buddy Dr. Gene Meieran is one of them.
Join us for this fun clip of Gene Meieran sharing a REALLY fun story about Meieranite, the Nanjing Show and a weird stroke of serendipity that brought everything together.

56 of 63 - Expo Hall Bathrooms at the 2024 Nanjing Show
Everyone poops...at least according to the book from Minna Unchi.
That being the case, you just KNOW that I had to do a review on the bathrooms at the Expo Center.
Fortunately, I had the wisdom NOT to film in the bathroom but I certainly had my opinion of it.
****************************************************************************************************
57 of 63 - Carved Jade Dealer at the 2024 Nanjing Show
In an earlier clip you saw some of the REALLY large jade carvings that we reviewed.
But these large pieces certainly aren't the kind of pieces that would be fit in most households. However, THIS dealer we visited had a lot of carved jade pieces that could fit perfectly in a standard display case.

58 of 63 - Nanjing City Walls at the 2024 Nanjing Show
One of the key attractions in Nanjing is the ancient City Wall that surrounded the city. Initially created during the Ming Dynasty when Nanjing was China's capital, the wall took over 21 years to complete and became the largest city wall ever constructed in China.
Join us as we go on a 2.41 mile/3.88 km walk along wall bordering beautiful Xuanwu Lake.

59 of 63 - Nanjing Yangtze Bridge at the 2024 Nanjing Show
For our final cultural tour of this trip, we head over to the Nanjing Yangtze Bridge which opened in 1968 and, for the first time, connected Beijing to Shanghai.
This become one of the most important bridges in China and still remains an absolute icon as it spans the famous Yangtze River.
We started off trying to get a good angle to shoot the bridge and ended up walking 3.12 miles/5.02 km across the entire bridge. What an experience!!!

It's our final breakfast in Nanjing and I wanted to try something local versus having breakfast at the hotel. Alina found a local dumpling restaurant and off we went for yet another OUTSTANDING meal!!!

62 of 63 - Departing at the Airport at the 2024 Nanjing Show
I arrived at the Nanjing Lukou International Airport a few hours early for my flight. Check in and security was a breeze. On my way to the airport lounge, I'm still amazed at the lack of people in this HUGE airport serving a city of 9.3 million people.

63 of 63 - Airport Snacks at the 2024 Nanjing Show
I'm hanging out the airport lounge on my way out of China and I'm AHHHHMAZED at one of the snacks I discovered. I couldn't resist. I HAD to make one final video on this!!!!
