Today we celebrate the 18th anniversary of the start of FMF.
Comparing FMF’s numbers from August 7, 2021, to today, we can say that in the last three years :
- 7443 messages have been posted
- 466 topics have been started
- 512 new users have registered (Welcome to all!)
- 8356 photos have been uploaded.
- The number of visits to the forum has been 42,633,625.
Congratulations to the entire FMF community and thanks to everyone who makes and has made it possible for this forum to stay alive and, considering the numbers, in good shape.

18th anniversary of the start of FMF! 😉
This has been a long journey, always exciting, sometimes very demanding, and overall, part of my life and the lives of other administrators.
Many of them are no longer with us, which proves how exhausting it is to work on something that, while being popular, also aims to have significant scientific content (or mineralogical to be more precise...)
Other administrators are still here, working tirelessly for the common good. So, long live the FMF administrators! Without them, none of this would have been possible.
And now I challenge the administrators to add what stands out the most in this Forum to this thread: images. Let’s see which of them can post attractive historical images of FMF (or related to FMF) here. The one that wins (according to my own criteria, after all, I created the forum! 😂) will receive a nice mineral as a prize. But beware, this is an open contest! If in the end, someone who is not an administrator posts a historical FMF image that turns out to be the winner, they will be the one to get the rock.
Come on, FMFers, a mineral awaits you…!
PS: The contest closes tomorrow at 12:00 midnight (U.S. time)

And now I challenge the administrators to add what stands out the most in this Forum to this thread: images. Let’s see which of them can post attractive historical images of FMF (or related to FMF) here [...] | Challenge accepted, Master! I searched all the archives in the world and found the oldest document that is related to FMF. This ancient letter dates back to the late 16th or early 17th century. Historians are not sure who wrote it but fortunately it is well-preserved so we can read the Latin inscription. It says:
Translated into English it says:
The FMF forum was launched. May it henceforth serve those who unite in love for the beautiful stone. May it be a place where all friends of the beautiful stone meet. And may FMF last forever. May it be the place where stone lovers can show each other their treasures, help each other and be happy that they have such a wonderful activity. Holy be FMF!
So I thought I could share this to our 18th birthday - though our community might be much older ;-)

Oh yes congratulations Jordi and thank you!
Not only do Jordi and his expert collaborators help us, we who are mineralogy enthusiasts to the point of having become collectors, but Jordi and his team have developed in the public a spirit of scientific rigor very far from the usual considerations so superficial when they are not deliberately misleading.
Scientific curiosity is also born in the admiration of minerals, with even a lesson in philosophy in learning the rigor of crystallographic laws: minerals accept ions external to their mineral composition, as long as the crystal lattice tolerates it.
I propose beryl as an example. This mineral has 7 varieties, the rarest being vorobyevite known for a long time. Cr, Fe, Na, K, Cs, H2O, etc. are found in small proportions < 1%.
If the Cs content (large atom) reaches 15%, the symmetry of the structure falls and we obtain another mineral: pezzotaite.
Pezzotaite can be a high-quality gem, but it is very rare because the cesium must come from the alteration of other minerals included in granites.
Chance and the necessity of evolution (le hasard et la nécessité – Jacques Monod).
Sharing our passion is necessary to encourage young people to choose scientific studies, the best training for tomorrow.
Roger.

Who is this person, and what happened to him? It looks like he was having fun, however!

Tobi!
Thank you for your creativity and ability to surprise us.
PS: we’ll send you the rock after August 15th.
