Dear fellow collectors, after Michael asked me for some impressions of my new showcase dedicated to German minerals, I presented the new setting in my collection thread:

I would be interested in seeing other collection setups. We share so many single specimens, why not our display showcases? I want to encourage you to show how your collections are stored and presented :-)

Here you go!
Mainly stored in old items
- a 2m x 2m bookcase I converted with glass shelves, wallpapered and painted white. Lights added in the cabinet and in the room too. Lower section is full of specimens. UK on the left, Iberia on the right
- a 2m x 2m haberdasher's case. UK and international on the left, Iberia on the right. Lower drawers for non-collection material
- a 1m x 1.5m plan/map store, with all the bases strengthened with 10mm ply. All Iberia
- a 1m x 0.4m slope (the only thing I had made)
These are all in my office and kept closed/dark to avoid light. There are masses of packing materials in the garage

This looks great, James, thank you for the insight! I hope others will contribute too because I think that our collections that we discuss and share here every day are so wonderful as a whole that only showing the single pieces does not justice to our effort and love in building our collector dreams ...
I love the way you present your collection!

In the main display there is a 'crib sheet' that tells you what each specimen is and where it is from. Small font but readable.

Space is almost always a problem with collections. Some selected specimens from our collections are displayed in lighted cabinets, but the majority reside in numbered flats. Since the entire collection is entered in a searchable database, any particular piece is easily located. Following are a few pictures of some of the collection. Since I am also a woodworker, I have built several cabinets to house our collections.

Michael, it's a pleasure to look at your collection! Wonderful pieces and a really nice setting with your beautifui cabinets!

That's why I decided to keep only "selected" specimens and get rid of those I don't want anymore. I once had a rather systematic approach with the idea of collecting as many minerals as possible. But that didn't satisfy me and so I changed my focus to aesthetics. I have some boxes with specimens (maybe 50 pieces) but I don't consider them part of my collection, they are sale material.
I really admire the pieces in your drawers, you have a stunning collection!

I did the same in terms of downsizing. A lot of the self collected material was sold at shows. Almost all the non-UK and non-Iberian material was exchanged (keeping the few my wife refused to let me exchange). Thus a garage full was reduced to what you see now - and all that was given to me children after my wife's death. I am now just their curator.

Thank you James. I derive about the same amount of satisfaction building the cabinets as I do building the collection. I only wish I had space for more of them.

Thank you Tobi. I suppose at some point I will consider downsizing and letting some pieces go, but I haven't reached that point yet. When I go through the collection to see what I can get rid of, each piece brings back memories of when I collected it, who I acquired it from, etc. and I end up keeping everything. Actually, there are about 40 flats of "sale material" (mostly stuff I collected personally or obtained in trade) out in the shop. Those are not part of the collection.

It warms my heart to see so many specimen drawers and specimen flats. I wish I could attach my article from Rocks & Minerals "To Have and to Hold" but the system prevents it. My article is essentially a rave about the joys of having a collection where one can pick up the specimens and admire them from all sides. In other words, specimens that are not behind glass. The article is Vol. 99, No. 3, 2024 of Rocks & Minerals.
