Hi Michael,

I really like your celestine specimens! Not a mineral that I collect but these two are great. Sakoany produces endless masses of celestine but some of them stand out and I would consider your specimen with that prominent flawless main crystal one of the outstanding ones.
The one from Afghanistan is also very beautiful. These are quite new and I think they will become a modern classic. Congratulations on getting one before they will disappear from the market in the future.

Best regards
Tobi

Thank you Tobi. Celestine was first collected from the Sakoany deposit in the late 1960s, and many tons of specimens have been produced. I don't know what the current status of the deposit is, but there are still plenty of specimens on the market from which to choose. Of course many have significant damage, and others are simply jumbled masses of crystals. Although I already had a relatively nice celestine from this location that I acquired many years ago, this particular piece caught my eye because of the undamaged, large crystal, and the saturated color.

I first started seeing celestine specimens from Afghanistan about 2 years ago at U.S. shows. They have become somewhat more plentiful on the market and prices seem to have come down a bit. There were a couple of dealers who had pieces at the recent Denver Show. I don't know much about the locality, but I'm guessing that current and future production might be somewhat limited. That said, this piece met my criteria, so I decided to pick one up before they disappeared.

Best,
Michael

I live ~30-40 km away from Rockenberg and you see a lot of them here on shows and in collections. The mineralogical museum of my hometown Marburg has a specimen that weighs 4,5 tons and resides outside in a metal cage because several people took it as a chance to "collect" their own specimen there ;-)

Tobi, this is the first one that I have ever come across. I'd like to see a picture of that 4.5 ton specimen. Is collecting still allowed at the location?

I guess there are more of them here in Hesse than in the U.S. ;-)

Here's the German Wikipedia photo of the museum:

You can see the cage with the Rockenberg Beast inside ;-)

A few years ago (maybe 6-8y) a friend of mine went collecting there, but I don't know the current status.
