Anapaite-MIM_Museum(2263).jpg
 Mineral: Anapaite
 Locality:
Chernomorsky Mine, Eltigen-Ortel' Trough, Kerchenskoe deposit, Kerch peninsula, Crimea peninsula, Crimea Oblast, Ukraine
 Dimensions: 8.5 x 10 x 6 cm
 Description:
El'tigen - Ortel'skoye mestorozhdeniye, 2 Chernomorskoye, Kerch', Ukraine

Mass: 561 g
MIM number: 2263
A 3 cm honey-brown barite ball is beautifully placed in a vug resulting from the fossilization of a bivalve (which shape can still be seen) amidst a plethora of translucent, sea-green anapaite tufts. Anapaite is a very rare phosphate: the elements calcium and phosphorus needed to form this species are derived from the fossilized shell material (the initial calcite of the shell still appears in patches outside of the latter), while iron comes from the iron deposit of sedimentary origin in which the bivalve fossilized.

Elbaite (variety verdelite)-MIM_Museum(2268).jpg
Mineral: Elbaite (variety verdelite) on Quartz (variety smoky) and with Albite and 'lepidolite'
 Locality:
Cruzeiro Mine, Santa Maria do Suaçui, Governador Valadares, Vale do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais, Brazil
 Dimensions: 56 x 37 x 45 cm / main crystal: 49 cm
 Description:
Mina Cruzeiro, São José da Safira, vale Doce, Minas Gerais, Brésil

Mass: 31900 g
MIM number: 2268
Large plate formed of ten very well-formed crystals of smoky quartz (the largest measuring 20 cm), slightly bluish albite blades and lepidolite on which a huge crystal of green tourmaline has formed in a tilted position with several other smaller crystals. The large crystal is translucent on the surface with a deep bottle green color, while the small crystals are transparent. All tourmaline terminations are pointed, some being fibrous. It is remarkable that such an assemblage formed and survived virtually intact, especially in this mine where this is not the usual type of production.

Bournonite-MIM_Museum(2269).jpg
 Mineral: Bournonite
 Locality:
Víboras Mine, Machacamarca, Machacamarca District, Cornelio Saavedra Province, Potosí Department, Bolivia
 Dimensions: 16 x 16 x 14.5 cm / main crystal: 10.8 cm.
 Description:
Mass: 4710 g
MIM number: 2269
Large cluster of bright crystals in subparallel formation. These very well-formed crystals resemble cogwheels (which is the characteristic twinning of this species) giving this sample the appearance of a gearbox, hence its nickname, "The Gearbox". It is remarkable that such a large plate could be recovered intact, knowing that bournonite is a very fragile mineral. This is one of the largest and best groups of this mineral found in Bolivia.
Photographer: AINU / Augustin de Valence;
Publication: "Rocks & Minerals: Vol. 98, No.6 Nov/Dec 2023"

 Dimensions: 9.5 x 7 x 45 cm
 Description:
Mass: 2484 g
MIM number: 2270
Large, perfectly formed and limpid monocrystal with the characteristic habitus known as Muzo (tapered shape, some perfectly smooth faces and others marked with parallel striations, base with the 6 classic faces of quartz merging into 3 faces at the top highlighting the actual trigonal symmetry of this mineral, perfect pointed termination). The saber shape reminiscent of the Star Wars movies earned this crystal its “Lightsaber” nickname.

Scheelite-MIM_Museum(2282).jpg
 Mineral: Scheelite on Muscovite
 Locality:
Pingwu Mine, Huya township, Mount Xuebaoding, Pingwu, Mianyang Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China
 Dimensions: 14 x 12.5 x 11 cm
 Description:
Mass: 3113 g
MIM number: 2282
Dipyramidal crystal of outstanding size, excellent symmetry, good luster and color (amber-orange, quite dependent on the nature of the lighting), sitting upright on just the right amount of crystallized matrix with all display terminations exposed and showing. Usually more than one termination is buried in the matrix. Here, all but the bottom are free of the matrix. The tips are transparent. It is quite unusual that a crystal of this size could survive extraction totally unscathed.

 Dimensions: 25 x 13 x 17.5 cm / main crystal: 7.5 cm
 Description:
Mass: 9950 g
MIM number: 1601
Probable year of extraction : 2013
Large mass of black lamellar hematite studded with lustrous crystals of pentagonal dodecahedra shaped pyrite. In the center of the sample is a well formed 7.5 cm wide "iron cross" twin resulting from the 90 degrees overlapping of two dodecahedra. It is surprising to see in the same sample equilibrium domains where sulfur can give compounds in its least oxidized state (as in pyrite, FeS2), and where, simultaneously, iron has its highest degree of oxidation (as in hematite, Fe2O3). The deposits of the island of Elba and of Tuscany constitute the basis of the Etruscan iron industry and are thus at the origin of one of the oldest civilizations that used iron.
