PostPosted: Mar 28, 2010 09:30    Post subject: Diamond crystal characteristics

Hello Everyone,

I have recently acquired several tiny Diamond specimens from several countries and today I have finally gotten around to looking at them in detail.

I am looking for anyone out there who can help me find information on inclusions and etching pits for starters. Of the two I have looked at so far I have seen inclusions in one and what seem to be pyamidal pits on another. I can't wait to look at the others, but I have had little luck finding info on this subject other than it affects the value.

Thank you,

Jim Prentiss

You might try the book "The Nature of Diamonds," edited by George Harlow, 1998, Cambridge U. press.

I would add to John's suggestion a few others:
"The MicroWorld of Diamonds" by John Koivula (definitive pictorial work regarding inclusions in diamonds; if you are really interested in this subject, you should order this book through the author's website).
"The Properties of Diamond," edited by JE Field (you may find this at a university library, it is a very expensive reference text and probably more than you will want to go into, but it does cover everything you could imagine about etch pits and surface structures)
"The Mineralogy of the Diamond," Yu. L. Orlov (a much shorter reference text also available through Univ. loan)
"Rough Diamonds, a Practical Guide," Nizam Peters (more on morphology as related to cutting, but a brief explanation of surface structures).
The "Diamonds & Gold" Jan/Feb 2004 issue of The Mineralogical Record - just for the pictures showing many crystal forms of diamonds.

Best wishes,
Elise

Thank you Elise,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I have been off the net for a bit.

Thanks again,
