I am really excited- The hardware replacement we ordered arrived today so I was able to connect the computer with the animation about fluorescence to the exhibit lights and control their turning on and off with the animation. Though not shown in these photos, George has installed the labels for the specimens. The fluorescent minerals exhibit is now complete!

Want to see the animation? Please visit us.

Congratulations George and John. I would like to say that when I was at the old museum at Michigan Tech recently the fluorescent exhibit was far and away the best that I had ever seen. I am sure that this new one is even better, if that is possible.

Thank you John.
I'd also like to add that the museum seems to be very popular this summer! The attendance
by visitors seems to me to be very high. The new location has made the museum much more accessible.

George and Robert Rann have a new book out now about the museum with some
history and highlights of the collections. Mineral News recently posted a nice review.

Cheers
John

One never knows what one might find on exhibit in the museum. George seems to constantly be adding new things that take me by surprise. Art Moretta recently passed away and willed his collection to the museum. Many of his finest specimens can now be seen sprinkled among the new exhibits.

The museum held a sale of surplus and deacessioned items as part of
the Copper Country Mineral Retreat activities. Folks lined up a little before 8 a.m.
Nearby, the Copper Country Rock and Mineral Club is also holding its annual gem and mineral
show in Houghton, Michigan this weekend.

PostPosted: Aug 15, 2012 22:10    Post subject: A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum - Fundraiser Event

Each fall ince 1997 the A. E. Seaman has hosted a fundraiser event sponsored by the Seaman Mineral Museum Society. The first gala was called "The Graphite Ball" and featured a composition for string quartet inspired by graphite's crystal structure, a short and humorous talk about graphite by me (wearing a tux), a wonderful dinner, silent and live auctions, and dancing.

Subsequent events have featured tanzanite, datolite, fluorescent minerals, copper, ruby and more.

Now for the 16th annual fundraiser gala, the museum will come full circle back to carbon. But this time perhaps more refined? The them will be a celebration of DIAMOND. It will be held in Houghton, Michigan on October 20, 2012 in the ballroom on the campus of Michigan Technological University. If you would like an invitation to be sent to you, please send me a message here or an email to:
jaszczak(AT)mtu{dot}edu

Tony Nikischer, winner of last year's Charles A. Salotti Earth Science Education Award will present a short talk about diamonds at the event, and a new winner of the award will be announced.

Curator Dr. George Robinson and Professor Robert Rann (Madonna Univ.) have published a new book "The A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum: Its History and Collections." It is 95 pages, with many full color specimen images as well as black and white historical images of people and places relevant to the museum's 110-year history. The book also comes with an indexed CD containing hundreds more high-quality specimen images. The book is available from the Museum's gift shop.
