PostPosted: Jun 02, 2012 20:43    Post subject: Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Last week I had an opportunity to visit the minerals exhibit at the ROM. I thought I'd share photos with you, I hope you like them.

Some of my photos didn't come out great, but I am fortunate to have at my disposal the "ROM images" website (Royal Ontario Museum Gallery Photos are up) and could look up each specimen. The website came in handy for looking up localities that I didn't catch - everything except the really big showpieces is in there. Dimensions are from the website too.

I am traveling regularly to Toronto these days and hope to return and get more pics.

Here goes...I took a lot of photos so will only get started today.

- Tracy

Also to the far right (closest to the entrance) is a display of meteorites. Videos about minerals and meteorites are on the wall behind me.

Hi Tracy, thank you so much for thinking of me! But ... no, why should i like it? A 30 cm matrix specimen of my favourite mineral in great condition and vibrant colour and from Germany's most desired locality ... totally boring ;) ;) ;)

Hello Tracy,

I would gladly bring it back home too, if Tobi didn't have the time to get it first ;-) Hope you'll post more pictures of the ROM.

No chance, Chris, it was promised to me ;)

Tracy, the left specimen on https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/img_1796_107.jpg - it this a blue fluorite from Halsbrücke, Saxony, Germany?
If so, there's not only one specimen on that picture that makes me drool ... ;)

Hi Tracy and hi to everybody!
I agree with you, Tracy: This sulphur specimen comes from a mine in the Agrigento Province in Sicily (Cozzodisi or Floristella, I think) and the white crystals are a fluorescent aragonite (pink under UV light).
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

PostPosted: Jun 03, 2012 12:10    Post subject: Re: Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I'm only getting started. I took over 180 photos and when I adjust for doubles and blurries there's still a good 70-80 pics to share. (rough guess) I'll just upload as time permits until I run out...and then when I go back for more (maybe early July).

The ROM images website is great. If something catches your eye after the fact you can go and look it up later. Click on the specimen image for locality, date collected, and other bits of info.

I'm going to post things more or less in order that I took them. I went through the regional displays, then the center aisle displays, then back through the systematic displays. After a point I can't remember where I took each photo but that was my general path.

Onward...

Hi Tracy,

Glad you had a good time in the gallery. In the next year we are upgrading a section of the gallery where the orbicular granite sits. Watch for some new and exciting changes in the Teck Suite of Earth Sciences :)

And btw that Baryte from Madoc is one of my favs. We found two of them tucked away high on a shelf one afternoon in the collection room. It was almost as good as digging them out of a pocket!

best
Katherine

I suppose https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/img_1950a_653.jpg will have the same effect on Gail as the German fluorite had on me :-)

The cluster of calcite scalenohedrons coated with goethite is from the Faraday mine, near Bancroft, Ontario. The specimen in the ROM and another in the Cranbrook Musuem in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, are probably the 2 best of those type of specimens from that mine.

Thanks Katherine and Susan for chiming in! Feel free to correct any things I get wrong as I post.

Jordi, could you please revise the locality on the Bancroft calcite to include Faraday Mine? Also, the sulfur...I guess I have NO sense of scale...it's sulfur with aragonite from Assaro, Caltanisetta, Sicilia, Italy and is 48 x 26 x 20 cm.

Silvermines District, County Tipperary, Ireland
Unknown
"The Lead and Zinc deposits of the Silvermines District, County Tipperary, Ireland have been mined for centuries. In 1978, the International Mogul Silver Mine became famous for world class mineral specimens with the discover of a spectacular, single large crystal pocket containing galena, sphalerite, dolomite, quartz, Baryte and pyrite. Many of the pieces from the find were acquired by a Cornish mineral dealer, but some were saved by the miners. These classic mineral specimens were donated to the ROM by the former mine foreman at the Mogul Mine." (gift of Mr. Joseph Sönser)

Note from Katherine: "recovered from a depth of 1 metre, this specimen was bought from Dr. Dave London, from the University of Oklahoma in 1996." It reminds me of a pile of discarded nylon stockings. :)

We brought home 6 pieces when the Glove Mine produced the very best specimens 91940s to 1950s). The piece imaged had it's very own seat on the plane on the way home from Tucson that year. Some of the blades of wulfenite are 2 to 3 inches across. It is an absolutely wonderful piece, with zero damage, and it will never travel because wulfenites are so darn finicky.

Thanks so much Katherine for the side stories! Makes this thread even better.

Tomorrow I'm going away for the weekend, so one more set before I go pack...

PS Enjoy the love, Tobias. :)

Large stand-alone stibnite xl. I don't think the photo does it justice. Note from Katherine: An "old school" piece. It says we acquired it in the mid 1890s. It is a classic!
