Thanks Tobi. It even has one of our favorite minerals on the lower right edge.

Thanks Tobi. I found several new barites in Tucson which we were able to add to our collection. One in particular that I am excited about is from the Clara Mine. I will post that one in the near future when I am able to get a good photo of it.

Michael, how certain are you that that baryte specimen is from the Clara Mine? It's completely different from anything I've seen from that mine (which is an absolute paradise for a baryte collector like myself). I would have thought Lavrion in Greece would be far more likely if it hadn't been labelled as coming from the Clara.

Niels, not certain at all - I acquired the barite from a German dealer and that is what his label stated. I did review all of the Clara Mine barite specimens on Mindat, and while I didn't find any that looked similar, it was apparent that the location produced numerous habits of barite. Thanks for the insight. I'll have a look at the Lavrion photos.

Yes, that immense diversity is the very reason why I was hesitant to categorically rule it out as coming from the Clara mine. I'm still completely surprised every single time I come across a few new habits, just when I thought I had seen them all. :D This particular habit however seems to be completely absent from this mine, regardless of colour and crystal size, hence my gut feeling why Greece would be a much better fit.

Anyway, thanks for sharing, I always really enjoy seeing your photos!

Hi Michael, hi Niels, indeed a beautiful baryte, but I'm also doubtful: I have seen a lot Clara barytes and I also visited the Clara Mine Museum where you can see how many different crystal varieties occur there. But if this one is from Clara, not sure ... I agree with Niels who is much more baryte-educated than me, this is really not a typical Clara specimen but it doesn't look too strange to rule it out ... :-/

Maybe a little question mark on the label would do it?

Regards
Tobi

Niels and Tobi,

I browsed through all of the Greek barite photos on Mindat and there are a couple of Lavrion barite specimens from the Sounion Mine that are remarkably similar to the one I have. I am starting to believe that my specimen is from Greece, not Clara. Again thanks for the input.
