It's time to leave the confines of the U.S. and post a few of the European specimens in my collection.

Thank you for your kind comment Peter. I love the perfection that thumbnails often exhibit, and they are certainly easier to store.

This morning's post includes a few more pieces from Europe. The last is one of my all time favorites due to its history and the fact that I was able to spend 5 months in Iceland in the late 60s. I never found anything of this caliber, but had a great time trekking around this beautiful country.

1623 Smoky Quartz gwindel.jpg
 Description:
Quartz var. smoky
Cavradi Gorge, Curnera Valley, Grischun, Switzerland
4.1 x 4.6 cm.

These specimens came out in the early 1990s and are very scarce nowadays.

1738 Stilbite (2).jpg
 Description:
Stilbite
Teigarhorn, Berufjordur, Suour-Mulasysla, Iceland
5.8 x 9.4 cm
This specimen has an interesting history. It was collected by Swedish geologist Carl Willhelm Paijkull during his expedition to Iceland and sold to the Natural History Museum in Stockholm around 1866. I often wonder where else it has resided until now.

PostPosted: Dec 15, 2012 11:04    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

I'll start off today with a specimen from the mines at Trepca. There is active mining at this deposit again, so I hope we will see many more nice specimens from there in the future. The last piece is a heulandite from Iceland that was once part of the Washington Roebling Collection which went to the Smithsonian. I am very happy to have this piece as well as the accompanying labels.

PostPosted: Dec 23, 2012 13:20    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

Today's post include a few specimens from the Madan orefield in Bulgaria. This polymetallic deposit has been known since ancient times and includes a large number of mines. Although many are now closed, there are still several working mines and specimens are still being recovered from a few of the closed mines. I have been working on assembling a representative suite of specimens from the Madan, Zlatograd, and Laki Districts for about the last 20 years and will start off with several from the Madan District.
