PostPosted: Nov 19, 2012 11:00    Post subject: Collection of Michael Shaw

I developed a passion for minerals after visiting the mineral display at a museum in my hometown. I started a collection soon thereafter and have been at it for some 60+ years now.

I enjoy assembling suites of minerals from various locations, and a few of my favorite localities are Maramures, Romania; Madan, Bulgaria; Dal'negorsk, and Southern Illinois. That being said, I do no not limit my collection to those areas, and my collection is really worldwide in scope.

From time to time I will post images of specimens I have acquired through self-collecting, trading and purchasing. I hope everyone will enjoy these as much as I have enjoyed browsing through the photos submitted by other collectors.

Michael

Hi Mike,

Well, I cannot say that my first specimens looked that nice!

Nice photo, too!

Cheers,

Thanks Mark. Nice to hear from you. I was lucky to have had a very generous mentor.

Hi Michael,
The photo of the andalusite in transmitted light is really neat! Would you post one of the specimen in reflected light as well? I wondered what the crystals are growing in.

The andalusite is not Michael's but rather Crosstimber's. It appears that Michael's thread has gotten sidetracked. Perhaps we could separate the postings into Michael and Crosstimber, so that each maintains their own thread?

Thank you all for the kind comments. Elise, the andalusite crystals are embedded in a dark gray slate. I'll take a photo in reflected light and post it when I get a chance.

Tracy, sorry for the confusion. In the meantime, I have selected a few more pieces for today's offering.

The apology is mine, Michael. I'm off to a grouchy start of the day.

The andalusite is quite wonderful.

Thank you Carles. Your thread was what inspired me to start one of my own.

Elise asked for a photo of the andalusite in reflected light, so here goes. The first is obviously a photo of the same specimen I posted previously. The second is of another piece showing a cross-section of the cigar-shaped crystal and the terminal end embedded in the matrix.

After previewing these last two, I decided I will have to end my post for today with a little color.

Neat! and helps put the andalusite in context. I have a large crystal from Hill City, S. Dakota which has a very rough surface -- I am not sure if it was extracted from a matrix such as what you show above or if it grew freely. It is interesting to see the black mineral surrounding the andalusite and trailing off to another crystal and also to see the colors of the 4 sections. Do they have eye-visible pleochroism ? I have some slices which show it nicely in the core but I haven't found any that show it so colorfully in the surrounding sections - that is, none so transparent as what you show in the back-lighted slice. You can see one of those in this old thread: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=13065&highlight=#13065

(The kammererite is beautiful, I don't think I've ever seen such large crystals. The color is mouthwatering!)

Hi Elise,

Thanks for providing the link to your andalusite. I checked it out and was surprised to see how different it was. The ones I posted do not show any pleochroism. Just to be sure, I checked several other specimens I had from the same locality. :>(

Here a few more specimens from my collection that I am fond of.

Michael

Galena
Ballard Mine, Treece, Cherokee Co., Kansas, USA
6.6 x 8.0 cm.
Galena is one of my favorite minerals. My wife jokes that our home is settling on one end because of the number of galenas in my collection. This one is very bright for a Tri-State specimen and very difficult to photograph because of the many reflective surfaces on the overgrowths.

Although I try to collect specimens that would be classified as small cabinet size, with 6 x 9 cm being ideal, I am not opposed to adding a nice thumbnail specimen to the collection now and then. So, today's offering consists of three of my favorite T/Ns. It just so happens all 3 are from Mexico.

Fabulous collection! What a shame that the famous Russell, MA, almandine locality became "lost." It produced some great crystals! Your specimen is among them for sure.
