Dear Bob and Carles,

Happy New Year to both of you and thank you for writing. I also questioned the location information on the label but I bought this specimen from a trusted dealer and even looked up whether chalcopyrite is found at Elmwood and it is, but I believe that both of your are correct and defer to your knowledge and experience. The Calcite indeed does not look like those from Elmwood and I have several of these. I will change the location information on my label and would appreciate very much if one of the administrators will make the necessary correction.

Sincerely,

Don

I myself might easily make the correction, but it's up to you to investigate whether the specimen is either from Viburnum Trend or from Tri-State District, which are not the same. If in doubt, I suggest you ask the dealer.

Have you too a happy New Year, Don.

Carles

I had the same thought - otherwise we can only give the state

Hi, James

The Tri-State District is located on three different states, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. What should we do then? Just write Tri-State Mining District, USA, as Mindat does? And what if the locality was Viburnum Trend, which is in Missouri?

Hi Don,

If there is a bit of matrix on the back of the specimen, this could be the key. Tri-State specimens have a gray chert matrix, while those from the Viburnum Trend are hosted on dolostone or silicious limestone, never chert.

After some discussion and a photo showing the matrix of the specimen, it was agreed that this specimen was from Missouri's Viburnum Trend. The matrix is clearly a brecciated dolostone which is a characteristic of this district. Location data was updated accordingly.

Incredibly distinct phantoms/zoning inside of the crystals, I would like to see some detail shots of them :-)

Thanks

Thanks for the closer shots, wonderful crystals and a gorgeous specimen overall, I love the contrasting pyrite that grew on the fluorite!
And what does your phone say when it reads the QR code? ;-)

Do you have any more information on the Calcite's locality?
