Don,

I suggest to you to read Wire Silvers from Imiter (Morocco)

Dear Jordi,

I very much appreciate your suggestion and have read and reread every comment made regarding the fake silver from Morocco. When I buy a specimen from a dealer I always assume that it is legitimate. Sometimes I think that some dealers don't know when a specimen he has for sale is fake or real. This reinforces the principle that one should always buy from a reliable dealer. I also surmise that some dealers I have personally met at shows know less than I do about mineral specimens. I checked my specimen from Morocco as soon as I had the opportunity and looked for evidence of heating i.e. the brownish beige colors and bubbles as suggested by Joan. Quite honestly I still don't know if it is real or not. My gut feeling and I know those can be misleading is that it is real.

Ironically the next specimens I had intended to post were sulfurs from Sicily (noting Les' comments). This is in keeping with the native element theme.

I read John Veevaert's transcript of the interesting talk he gave on Fake Minerals at the Rocksaholics Symposium in Tucson this year. I discovered a manufactured/repaired/fake specimen soon thereafter by accident in my collection. If it would be of interest to any members of the Forum I will take pictures and post them this weekend.

Finally I would like to add that it seems that I am getting a lot more out of being a member of FMF than I am putting in.

Warm regards,

Don

Red Fluorite

Two possible causes of this brownish red color are noted.

Denver Show report - Mineral Dealer USA - Kristalle

Oct 1, 2009 – ... for the room is the new green Fluorites from Riemsvasmaak in South Africa, ... Green Fluorites from Riemvasmaak with other locality Fluorites .... starts as colourless or yellow, and turns pinkish to brownish red with sunlight.

Peter Lyckberg on mindat forum September 17, 2011

Yes, certainly some fluorite do change color with light exposure.

A giant fluorite pod in skarn (with some small molybdenite as a ring a few cm from its edge) had very strong purple color (some even reddish) at the 220 m level of the Yxsjöberg mine and changed color upon sun exposure with time.

This fluorite was exceptionally easy to give some energy immediately taken up by valence electrons (and yes some heat and sound....) and then gradually lost in the form of a yellowish-green visible light emitted, if beating on it with the sledge hammer.
(or shone at by the head light, or heated....)

The color changed during the years to a light sky blue to finally become white and specimens then looking close to quartz.
Yes fluorite is a fairly dense mineral.
