PostPosted: Feb 03, 2013 00:11    Post subject: James Madison University, Virginia, USA Mineral Museum

I had the pleasure or being able to spend a few hours in the Mineral Museum at James Madison University, Virginia, USA today. Dr Lance Kearns has done a great job putting together this museum. It is technically for the geology students at the University, but the museum is open to the public free of charge. I took a number of pictures and thought you would be interested in seeing them.

Dr Kearns is always looking for things to put on display. The museum has had some world class specimens donated, as I hope I will be able to demonstrate :-)

I hope it is alright, instead of filling in the mineral and location information, I have kept the labels in the photos. Please excuse my photography, I am still learning - any feedback and tips for improvement would be very welcomed!

Bob

Are you kidding? ;-) Please more!...

BTW if you can contact Dr Lance Kearns, you can tell him that the right spell for the Fluorite https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/img_2431_850.jpg is: Le Beix (see: https://www.mindat.org/loc-7905.html ) and that the right spell for the Aragonite https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/files/img_2455_208.jpg is "Minglanilla" instead "Minganilla" (see: https://www.mindat.org/loc-208082.html )

Being from Tarn I think the correct locality is Le Burg Mine ( https://www.mindat.org/loc-12810.html ) instead, a great French fluorite locality.

Nice specimens, please keep posting them, as much as you can, they are always welcome.

Best regards,

Felix Garcia

I disagree Felix, that Fluorite looks like from Le Beix not from Le Burg

Thank you very much Jordi! Once I am done uploading, I will share the page with Lance. I am fortunate in that I do get to see him on occasion, I even had the pleasure of going out to lunch with he and his wife. He is the person who worked with my daughter, Jessica, on the hollowed out galenas!

Thank you very much! I appreciate it! Now that my photography style has changed, I want to go back to the University of Delaware and retake my photos.

Hi Mr Simonoff,

Maybe it is just a first impression but the citrine IMG_2530 looks like a thermally treated amethyst.

The sample IMG_2531 is Mexican, probably from Las choyas, Chihuahua.

Thank you, when I am don't posting pictures, I will point Dr Kearns to this thread and he can go through everyone's helpful comments. He has proven in the past to be very interested in any information or advice that will help the museum.

Thanks!
