Baryte on hematite, from an unnamed Frizington iron mine. I can never make up my mind which way to display this piece.

I always think of Alston Moor as being, at least mineralogically, a part of Weardale, perhaps because it is the western part of the North Pennines Orefield, which is mostly within County Durham. Some great specimens came from the mines - now all closed - in this region.

Hi,
This Baryte comes from Egremont, others from Frizington. What are the features that make differentiate in the absence of a label? many thanks.
Roger.

Egremont and Frizington are two neighboring villages located in the center of the West Cumbrian (or Cumberland) Iron Ore Field. Many of the most productive mines were located in or near these villages. In the absence of any historic labels accompanying the specimens citing a specific mine, it is very difficult to say which mine they may have come from based on their appearance alone. Either of the two village names are often used as the specimen location in absence of a specific mine.

I must confess i don't know that much about the locality, the more i'm fascinated to see what colourful stuff it produces. I especially like the blue hemimorphites, they remind me of the great blue specimens from 79 Mine in Arizona or Wenshan Mine in China ...
Cheers!

With the kind permission of Ru Smith I merged the former topic he created: "Greens and Blues from the Caldbeck Fells" with this topic of England / Cumbria that now looks wonderful (and more coherent ;-)
Thanks Ru!

Tobi - the hemimorphites are from a different area from the Barytes and calcites. All in the same region but different mining zones
James

A linarite from (probably) Red Gill Mine.
Although labelled as being from Roughten Gill mine (one associated label gives the location as Rough Ten Gill!), Red Gill mine, the nearby classic locality for linarite is the more likely location!

Fine calcite and quartz Am. Lovely linarite, Ian.
Here's an unusual "wheatsheaf" habit of mimetite from Dry Gill.
