A new book about mines and minerals from Northern England has been published. It is a new book from the Natural History Museum and the National Museums of Scotland. It is very similar to the 2003 book: Minerals of Scotland (A. Livingstone).

This notice appeared some time ago on the Forum but we would like to include it with the others under Mineralogical Literature, a thread that is more recent. You will certainly want to add this to your library.

Hi

This is yet another good value book on UK minerals

Has a lot of interesting background info on the Mines. The photographs are better than Tindles book but is not as comprehensive.

The colour rendition of the mineral photographs appears to be very good (particularly given the nature of Fluorite.
The biographical notes on collectors of minerals and other famous identities who were associated with the mineral industry in the early years is an interesting touch.

Its an easy informative read that is not too technical.
Cheers

While the title of the book is "Minerals of Northern England," it is not a topographic mineralogy as is Andy Tindle's book. Rather, it is primarily about the Geology and mining history of the North Pennines and Cumbria. I think the strength of the book is in putting all the marvelous minerals that have come from the mines in Weardale, Alston Moor, Caldbeck Fells and the West Cumbrian Iron Ore Fields in both geological and historical perspective. Unfortunately, the choice of minerals to illustrate the book seems largely limited to those in the holdings of the Natural History Museum, London, which is rather lacking in specimens from more modern occurrences within the past 20-30 years. That being said, it is a well-written and well-illustrated book that should be in the library of anyone interested in British Minerals and mining history. Much has been written about the mines and minerals of Cornwall, but relatively little about the North.
