Recently there were several postings on FMF regarding the Changsha Show. I wanted to mention that Peter and Allison Megaw have a comprehensive 13-page article on the show in the current (Nov/Dec) issue of Rocks & Minerals. In the same issue, Jim and Gail Spann have an 11-page article on the first Hoppel auction, another popular subject on FMF

I have read with great interest the excellent article "Hoppel Collection Auction" in Rocks & Minerals about the recent auction of the "Hoppel collection” through Heritage Auction. First of all I want to congratulate Jim and Gail Spann, the authors. The style of the text is direct and clear. As in John White’s style, Jim and Gail Spann explain what they mean in a very precise way. Their economy of language in texts is a gift and not everyone has that ability (at least not me ;-)

I believe that the text of this article is of great interest for multiple reasons. After many years of arguing about prices, the transparency of the market, the absurdity (or not) of reported purchases or sales (see: Very little mineralogy in mineral collecting today and Tucson, questionable prices?) the auction seems to have found a way to sell high quality specimens that is indisputable because everyone can see the process from the start to the end and everyone can participate and buy (if they win) their most desired samples.

So far two major collections have been sold by auction. Some years ago the Freilich collection through Sotheby's and now the Hoppel collection through Heritage Auction, and although the first case did not seem to open the door to new ways of selling extraordinary specimens, this auction, according to Jim & Gail Spann, seems to have broken new ground :
" ... bringing transparency to this market. The effort is worth nurturing, and maybe this was a significant beginning after all..."

So, a very interesting article. You can obtain this issue of Rocks & Minerals through its web page.

To learn more about the Hoppel Collection Auction, see Hoppel auction, the web page of Heritage Auctions and the Bob Cook review of the catalogue book, written by Bob Cook in the same issue of Rocks & Minerals and with his characteristic black & acid humor sense ;-)

You are most kind, as always, Jordi. We enjoyed writing the article together. Jim and I often see things a little differently, and I was happy to add my perspective.
