We have already successfully completed the migration to a new, much more powerful and reliable server. One of the new functions installed during the migration is a new photo upload system. Now if a picture is more than 800 pixels wide, we save on the server the "big" version (reduced to 1600 pixels wide if it exceeds this size) as well as the reduced to 800 pixels wide version.
In the forum message threads you'll see the "small" version of the image, and if you click on it you'll be able to see the "big" version of the image.
The image viewer has controls to change the image size (magnifying glass icons in the upper left corner) . On the other hand if the picture does not fit on the screen you can scroll by dragging the image with the mouse.
I encourage you to try it, with this message I attach a photo, you can click on it to check how the image viewer works.
Greetings!

Congratulations Jordi and Staff,
The migration to the new server was successful. As far as I can see there are no problems. A lot of large companies has problems with migrations. Some systems are out of order for more than a day. Not with FMF. That's worth a big compliment.
Looking at the big version of the image I miss a button for closing the image. (I use Win 8.1 with IE 11)
Greetings,
Herman

Thanks Herman. As we said in A major new improvement in FMF :

so, here it is! ;-)
About the button for closing, we use a back button for all features related with FMF and as the new larger image is a feature related with FMF this is the reason why you should use the "back" button instead a "close" button.
Congratulations to Joan and Xavi, great job! (and congratulations to all FMFers, we are sure that these new improvements will make happier everyone! ;-)

Brilliant. The server is faster and the ability to get larger images is great (but now I will need to buy a bigger screen ;-) )

A fantastic feature, Joan, Jordi and crew. Nicely done. Now my inferior images will look far worse, thank you for that.

Congratulations to the FMF team! Much faster now, so this is very useful especially for the collector's pages with a lot of photographs. The magnifier is also very useful.

Posted: Nov 11, 2015 03:23 Post subject: New functionality for enlarged photos |
|
|
We have added some new functionality to the enlarged photos.
• The title gives the mineral, a summary of its locality and its dimensions
• If you click on the title you will go directly to the image on the forum.
• On the left, half way up there is an icon '>' that opens a window with the full information on locality, size and any description. If these were not provided the window will not open.
• In the upper, right hand corner there is a 'x' icon that has the same effect as the Back button on the browser
• Above the image there are the magnifying glass '+' and '-' icons that can be used to enlarge or reduce the image. The wheel on the mouse has the same affect, rolling up reduces the image and rolling down increases it.
We hope this helps
James

On the Spanish side we were asked if we could find a way of not covering the image with the description. Well after a lot of hard work we managed it and the information now appears below the image.
We have found that this is slightly browser dependent but it does seem to work with most browsers on most hardware. We have discovered that when using Firefox on a Windows computer you need to click the F5 key or Control+F5 to get it to work correctly.
Hope you like this feature even more with this improvement.
The FMF team

Quick question - has the attachment size limit one can upload changed recently?
It used to be 5 Mb per image/attachment until... yesterday.
Today I was trying to upload an image of 3.6 Mb but I got the following bilingual warning message
"Tried to upload empty file or the file is too big (more than 3Mb)".
"Está intentando enviar un fichero erróneo o demasiado grande (más de 3Mb)"
I can certainly reduce the size of the images to comply with the new limit but I was curious to know if this change was intentional as the comment next to the Filename field still says:
"The size of the image file should not exceed 5MB (mega bytes). We recommend that you reduce the image size to 1600 pixels".
So has the limit been reduced or is this a system glitch?
Thanks for any feedback.
Gérard

No everything is the same. Maybe that particular photo has some peculiarity…?
If it happens again with other photos please let us know.

Thanks for confirming Jordi.
After waiting for a while, I tried again and now it works - not sure what happened.

This is a great improvement. I have not been posting photos here or on some other sites since Mindat increased the photo file size to 40MB. I used to keep several different files with the file sizes appropriate for individual sites. I no longer do this as it far too disk space intensive and time intensive to make all the different acceptable formats. Maybe some day I will resize photos to meet the requirements here.
