PostPosted: Jul 18, 2015 07:14    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Muzo with acicular ??? (#547)

Unusual specimen from Muzo.
Acicular crystal habit is not common at all in the 2 Colombian emerald districts.
Could be aragonite or calcite... or something else?
In the last close-up image, the brownish elongated crystal is very likely parisite.
Host rock is black shale.

PostPosted: Jul 18, 2015 12:24    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Dioptase (#9100)

For those who are sick and tired of seeing emeralds in this thread, here is a nice break (Well, sort of, it's still green!)
I just found out that rendering dioptase-green is even more difficult than emerald-green.
This specimen was purchased by my father in Brazzaville back in the early 70's.
I doesn't seem to be glued but I might be wrong.
As per the locality, I have no idea where it comes from, so your comments and suggestions are welcomed. I labeled it as from "Republic of the Congo" but it could as well be from the ex-Zaire.

It looks like Calcite-Aragonite. Is very easy to check it, try if it fizz in dilute HCl or if it dissolves inside vinegar (after 24 hours)

(unless I glue everything back together of course).

The emerald - colorless transparent quartz association is more commonly found in Peñas Blancas than in Muzo.
White calcite is also visible on the opposite side of the emerald aggregate.
Host rock is black shale.

Hi Gerard. The orientation and irregularity of the dioptase crystals do look a bit unusual. You have a choice: dip it as Jordi suggested, or keep it with a question mark.

Thanks for your remarks Pierre.
Should it be a glued specimen, it's a bit too late to tell my dad, from whom I inherited this vivid green... artistic object.
Will just keep it with a question mark along with my "too nice to be true" group of specimens.

Emerald clusters are fairly common in the Western belt.
Complex crystallization patterns can be clearly seen on the faces of the various prisms (first 2 images).
Last image features a couple of clear colorless quartz crystals intersecting the upper part of the cluster.

This specimen comes from the Buena Vista mine in the Chivor district.
The Buena Vista mine is located on a hill overlooking the surrounding area (might explain the origin of the name "Nice view"?).
Administratively speaking, it is off the "green" state of Boyacá by a few hundred meters, where virtually all the Colombian emeralds come from.
Not only the view from that open-pit mine is nice but also the quality of the emeralds it produces (when the mine operates, which does not happen often).
The one featured here below is a fine example of the top quality material produced in the Chivor district, from a collector's point of view.
Host rock is a hard clay material also known as argillite.

The more emeralds you show us, the more fascinated I am!

Thanks Tobi for showing your appreciation!
Got hooked on the Colombian green treasure a while ago and stopped worrying about being addicted soon after.

A small specimen from a new find in the Chivor district.
All the crystals I have seen from this find exhibit a strong saturation.
Host rock is a crumbly gray shale.
